Looks like Tom Bateman was the missing variable to The Love Hypothesis movie’s romantic equation.

On July 17, Deadline announced that Bateman had officially been cast in The Love Hypothesis as Adam Carlsen. The highly-anticipated casting news was revealed a day after Riverdale star Lili Reinhart took to Instagram to announce that she had been cast as Olive Smith in the upcoming book-to-screen adaptation.

With one lead cast and the announcement that filming was underway, fans immediately began to question who would play Reinhart’s opposite in the movie. And let’s just say, every swoonworthy leading lad from Ben Barnes to Adam Driver‘s name was thrown in the ring for the role.

Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis follows Olive, a third-year Ph.D. candidate, who begins a faux relationship with a young professor, Adam, to prove to her best friend that she can have a long-term relationship. The novel is one of Hazelwood’s many STEMinist romances. While The Love Hypothesis was Hazelwood’s debut, she has gone on to write many BookTok favorites, including Deep End and Problematic Summer Romance.

The reason why there’s been so much discussion about The Love Hypothesis movie is because Hazelwood’s novel was initially published as Star Wars fan fiction about Reylo, the famous Kylo Ren and Rey ship. Many fans hoped Daisy Ridley and Driver would be cast as Olive and Adam in The Love Hypothesis movie. Now that Bateman has been announced as The Love Hypothesis‘ male lead, we’re curious if fans believe the British actor will live up to the hype surrounding the role. (Fun fact: Bateman is Ridley’s real-life husband!)
