‘The Buccaneers’: 3 Bewitching Moments Theo Rivaled Mr. Darcy From ‘Pride & Prejudice’

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Buccaneers Season 2.]
It looks like we aren’t the only ones who noticed that Theo (Guy Remmers) is giving big Mr. Darcy energy in The Buccaneers.
Not only have other fans picked up on all of the similarities between the two characters, but the actors themselves have, too. “I feel like Theo would love Matthew Macfadyen‘s Pride and Prejudice. I feel like he’d soak that up,” Remmers said in an interview. His Season 2 costars, Aubri Ibrag and Jacob Ifan, were quick to agree. “He’d feel right at home,” Ifan added.
It all comes down to the brooding and the yearning, which Theo has been doing plenty of in Season 2 of the historical romance. The former can be attributed to his wife, Nan (Kristine Frøseth), whom he fell in love with in Season 1. When he learns that she actually only has eyes for his best friend (Matthew Broome), Theo spirals — at least until Ibrag’s Lizzy becomes a stronger presence in his life. Cue the aforementioned yearning as they fall in love but can’t truly be together because he’s married.

There’s no doubt that Mr. Darcy, particularly the 2005 version, is the blueprint for yearners and brooders. But at the rate The Buccaneers is going, Theo is on track to take his title as one of the best yearners to ever do it in a romantic period drama. Read on for our top three moments from Season 2 where Theo channeled his inner Mr. Darcy.
1. Theo’s speech to his mom
In Episode 7, Theo utters what has to be the most romantic line we’ve ever heard from The Buccaneers. When his mom tries to apologize for telling Nan to go through with the marriage, he reprimands her and confesses that he loves Lizzy. “Hector’s Elizabeth?” she asks. “No. My Elizabeth. My Lizzy,” he says. “The woman I could have devoted my life to making happy if you hadn’t stepped in the way.” Swoon.
2. Theo and Lizzy’s stairs scene
In Episode 6, Lizzy and Theo finally have a moment alone together on the stairs, while their friends plan to help Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) escape from Seadown (Barney Fishwick). Their fingers brush as she tells him she doesn’t regret calling off her wedding with Hector.

Let us just say, the hand acting here totally reminded us of Macfadyen’s hand flex in the 2005 movie. It’s so subtle, but so full of longing, and it shows just how strong the chemistry is between Lizzy and Theo. Give us more!
3. When Theo tries to stop Lizzy’s wedding
That brings us to one of our other favorite moments from Theo. He nearly gives up but decides to runs through the streets to the church and state his case to Lizzy one last time. He spots Lizzy in her wedding gown, and the look of desperation on his face is Darcy through and through, reminding us especially of the look on Macfadyen’s face when he confesses his love to Elizabeth Bennet.
Then, Theo proceeds to make his own top-tier love confession. “Don’t get married unless you’re certain Hector gives you the kind of love you and I have,” he pleads. “You deserve your own love story. So don’t choose me. But also don’t just choose the first nice man who comes along and offers you half of [a whole love]. You should have it all. So choose you.”
With the Season 2 finale airing next week, we’re anxious to see how Theo and Lizzy’s story plays out. They have a lot more hurdles to overcome than Darcy and Elizabeth did. In the meantime, let us know what your favorite Theo moment was this season in the comments!
