Break out your best hand flex, Pride and Prejudice fans. Swooon has an exclusive excerpt of Audible’s new adaptation of Jane Austen’s legendary and timeless romance, the one and only Pride and Prejudice.

Industry‘s Marisa Abela voices the role of Elizabeth “Lizzy” Bennet, while Babygirl‘s Harris Dickinson takes on the role of Mr. Darcy. In this sneak peek, Abela and Dickinson tackle the incredible proposal scene between Lizzy and Mr. Darcy.

Readers will recall that Mr. Darcy proposes to Lizzy twice in the novel, and she turns him down the first time. Abela and Dickinson approach the pivotal moment with full force. A breathless Mr. Darcy calls upon Lizzy to reveal his intentions. He tells Lizzy about how “ardently I admire and love you.” He’s tried to fight those feelings, but his passion for Lizzy is one he’s “found for no other.” Swoon.

Needless to say, he’s shocked when Lizzy refuses his marriage proposal. The whip-smart and brutally honest Lizzy doesn’t appreciate having someone tell her that he likes her “against” his will. She’s also furious that he’s “ruined the happiness” between her sister, Jane, and Charles Bingley.

The chemistry and tension are ripe between Abela and Dickinson in this scene. Abela effortlessly captures Lizzy’s strength when she tells Mr. Darcy that he’s “the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.”

Audible’s retelling of Pride and Prejudice also stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Bill Nighy as Mrs. and Mr. Bennet, as well as Glenn Close as Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Grammy nominee Morgan Kibby composed the score. The audiobook will be released in the U.S., U.K., Canada, India, and Australia on September 9 on Audible.

This version of Pride and Prejudice is debuting ahead of Netflix’s TV adaptation. Emma Corrin will play the role of Elizabeth Bennet alongside Jack Lowden‘s Mr. Darcy.
