Colleen Hoover’s ‘Woman Down’: Everything We Know About Her New Romantic Thriller

The wait is almost over, CoHorts! Another Colleen Hoover book is on the way, and it’s not like anything she’s written before.
Described as one of Hoover’s darkest works so far, Woman Down comes about two years after the author’s last book, Too Late, hit shelves. The announcement also arrives while all of the legal drama surrounding the stars of her It Ends With Us adaptation is still going on.
“This one took me a while to finally get another book out for you,” the author told Today. “But I’m excited for you guys to read it and go preorder your copy today.”
What else has Hoover divulged about her next romantic thriller? Scroll for Woman Down‘s plot details, release date, and more.
What is Woman Down about?
Woman Down centers around an author facing viral backlash over her latest film adaptation — sound familiar? With the internet labeling her a fraud and fame-hungry opportunist, Petra Rose takes a hiatus at a remote lakeside cabin, looking for inspiration and to turn her career around. She arrives with her next suspense novel planned out and her savings nearly gone.
“Then he shows up,” the synopsis reads. “Detective Nathaniel Saint arrives with disturbing news, his presence igniting a creativity in her she thought long since burned out. Petra’s words return in a rush, and her fictional cop character begins to mirror the very real cop who’s becoming her muse.”
As fantasy and reality blur, Petra realizes that “inspiration this powerful comes at a cost. When Saint starts taking his role in her career a little too seriously, Petra’s forced to confront the chaos she created. But doing so could cost her more than the reputation she’s been trying to salvage. The reputation the world wrote for her — the reputation only she can reclaim.”

What was Woman Down inspired by?
Hoover hasn’t yet revealed if she pulled from real life to create Woman Down, but it’s impossible not to notice some interesting parallels between Woman Down‘s plot and the It Ends With Us controversy. After her 2016 novel made its way to the big screen, its stars entered a lengthy legal battle, which is still ongoing.
Blake Lively plays Lily Bloom in the movie, and the character’s abusive husband is portrayed by Justin Baldoni, who doubled as the movie’s director. Shortly after the movie came out in August 2024, Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment and trying to “destroy her reputation.” Hoover, who executive-produced It Ends With Us, spoke out in support of the actress.
So, after reading Woman Down‘s synopsis, could Hoover have been at least partly inspired by her own situation? It’s possible. What’s more, we’d be remiss not to point out her main character’s name. Again, the author hasn’t acknowledged any connections between her book and real events, but Petra is a character in Jane the Virgin, the CW show Baldoni starred in.
Petra and Baldoni’s Rafael repeatedly wrong each other throughout the series, and the former was pitted against Rafael’s main love interest, Jane, as a complicated antagonist. It could just be a coincidence, but who knows? Let us know what you think about the maybe-parallels between real-life and Woman Down in the comments below.
