The Colleen Hoover Cinematic Universe is getting bigger — and darker. Another one of the author’s bestsellers is headed to the big screen: 2018’s romantic thriller Verity. There’s been plenty of buzz around the adaptation since heavy-hitters Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson were announced as the leads — and now we can see them in action in the newly released trailer.
It teases plenty of steaminess and mind games ahead. The opening scene sets the tone, showing Johnson making out with Josh Hartnett‘s character, only for Hathaway to reappear in his place. From what we know about the new release date to casting details, here’s the latest about what’s sure to be the next Hoover hit.
When is Verity coming out?
Verity was originally going to be released on May 15, 2026, but it was pushed to October 2 of this year. Like It Ends with Us, Verity will be released in theaters. It’s unclear when the movie will hit a streaming service.
Who has been cast in the Verity movie?
Hathaway plays Verity Crawford, a famous author who is left incapacitated after a car accident. She’s also produced the film, accouncing on April 7 that filming had wrapped. She posted an Instagram video of her flipping through the book with the caption, “So Be It… that’s a wrap on the #VerityMovie production! See you in theaters May 15, 2026.”

The other major roles in Verity are Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s husband, and Lowen Ashleigh, the woman Jeremy hires to finish Verity’s novels. Hartnett plays Jeremy, while Johnson stars as Lowen. Hartnett and Hathaway were spotted filming the movie in Queens, New York, in February 2025.
Michael Showalter, who directed The Idea of You, which starred Hathaway, is directing and producing Verity for Amazon MGM.
What is Verity about?
Without veering too much into spoiler territory, Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh as she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, the husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, hires Lowen to complete the remaining books in his wife’s bestselling series. Verity has been left incapacitated after an accident.
When Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, she discovers an unfinished autobiography written by Verity. As she reads the manuscript, Lowen learns shocking details about Verity and Jeremy. Things get even more complicated as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy deepen, and she begins to wonder if she should let him read his wife’s words.
Are there other Colleen Hoover adaptations in the works?
After the massive success of It Ends with Us, which earned over $340 million at the box office, Hollywood is turning to Hoover’s trove of books for movie inspiration. Reminders of Him hit theaters in early 2026. Regretting You, starring Allison Williams and Dave Franco, came out shortly before. Verity is the only other adaptation that’s been announced.
