Charlie Evans as Hunter Davenport in 'Off Campus' Season 1

What To Know

  • Hunter Davenport, a standout hockey player from Elle Kennedy’s books, appears in Off Campus Season 1.
  • In the original novels, Hunter becomes a main character in the Briar U spinoff.
  • Hunter is portrayed by Charlie Evans, whose casting was kept secret to preserve the show’s twist ending.

Whether you’ve read Elle Kennedy’s books or not, we can all agree that we weren’t expecting that twist ending for Off Campus Season 1.

The first season of the Prime Video series veers outside of The Deal, which focuses on Hannah (Ella Bright) and Garrett’s (Belmont Cameli) love story, and incorporates storylines from The Score. In another surprise move, the show also introduces Hunter Davenport (Charlie Evans), a character book fans will likely recognize. (Warning: Off Campus Season 1 spoilers ahead!)

Who would’ve thought that the nameless guy Allie (Mika Abdalla) flirts with at the bar in Episode 7 is the Hunter Davenport? Hunter is well-known to fans of Kennedy’s Briar U series, but this version of him in the show isn’t all that familiar. At least, his actions aren’t. We’re in uncharted territory. Why does Hunter have bad blood with Dean (Stephen Kalyn)? What’s Hunter’s history with Dean’s sister? What’s more, who is Charlie Evans, the actor who plays him?

If you’ve asked any of the above questions, Swooon has got you covered with Hunter’s book background and Evans’ real-life background.

Charlie Evans attends the "Off-Campus" Premiere and After-Party on April 29, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.

Who is Hunter Davenport in the Off Campus books?

(The following contains spoilers for Elle Kennedy’s The Score and The Chase!]

Hunter isn’t introduced until the third book of Kennedy’s series, The Score, which centers on Dean and Allie’s romance. He’s a younger player on Briar University’s hockey team, but he’s one of the standout stars. Dean compares his skills to Garrett’s, but Hunter differs from him in that he has a major weakness: overconfidence. During a Malone’s outing, Dean gives Hunter advice, and Hunter realizes Dean actually has some valuable insight into his game. Dean offers to do one-on-one practice sessions with Hunter, which occur throughout the rest of the book.

During their talk at Malone’s, Hunter mentions that Dean should introduce him to whoever left a hickey on his neck. (It was Allie, whom he hasn’t told anyone he hooked up with yet.) Dean, obviously, doesn’t give him her name or number. He remarks that Hunter’s on his way to becoming a serious player. Hunter proves that Dean was right on the money over the course of the next books, but unlike the show, Allie is never one of his hookup partners.

In Kennedy’s Briar U spinoff series, which focuses on the younger player, Hunter becomes more than a supporting character. In the first book, The Chase, Dean’s sister gets a romance. Summer enrolls at Briar after Dean’s already graduated, but she takes a room in his former house, which is occupied by none other than Hunter and his teammate Fitz. Hunter starts crushing on Summer, but she only develops feelings for Fitz. Hunter spirals afterward and plays poorly as a result, costing Briar the playoffs.

So, long story short, the show is giving Summer and Hunter history that they don’t have in the books. We don’t know the full story yet, but whatever happened has made Dean hate the guy. It’s a far cry from their mentor-mentee dynamic they have in The Score. Plus, we should point out that Hunter rejecting a spot on the team originally is a new plot point, too. Color us intrigued!

Who does Hunter end up with in the Off Campus books?

Hunter does get his own book and romance. In the third Briar U installment, The Play, Hunter has made a vow to stay celibate. He doesn’t want to negatively impact the team like he did last season. Enter: new student Demi Davis. They start as friends, working on a year-long class project together. Demi decides she wants a rebound after her last relationship ends. She thinks Hunter is the perfect candidate. We won’t spoil the rest of the plot, but obviously, they end up together. All of these books have happy endings!

Who plays Hunter Davenport in the Off Campus show?

Evans is an Australian actor and a musician. He started stage acting when he was a child, according to IMDb, and moved to Los Angeles at 10 years old. Since then, he’s had three screen roles, starting with Everything’s Gonna Be Okay. He appeared in the 2023 movie Leave the World Behind, playing the son of Julia Roberts‘ character. Before Off Campus, Evans most recently acted as Jeremy Bradford in Hulu’s Paradise.
