Daniel Day-Lewis Makes Rare Comments About Wife Rebecca Miller Amid Return to Acting

It’s been nearly a decade since Daniel Day-Lewis graced our screens in Phantom Thread. Now, the three-time Oscar winner is back with Anemone, a film his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, directed and cowrote with him. In a new interview with his son, the private actor made rare comments about his wife, Rebecca Miller.
Daniel and Ronan were discussing a scene in Anemone when Daniel brought up something he’s learned from his wife. Ronan explained to Rolling Stone that he saw his dad muttering something to himself under his breath, which ultimately led to a 12-minute monologue in the film.
“I learned that from watching Ronan’s mom. When she’s working and writing something, she talks to herself quite a lot,” Daniel admitted. “I think characters just sort of announce themselves. That was definitely a big moment when I felt Ray kind of announce himself to me.”
Daniel also opened up about making The Ballad of Jack and Rose with his wife. The daughter of famed playwright Arthur Miller, Rebecca wrote and directed the 2005 film, which starred Daniel in the title role.
“We were all together on the set,” the There Will Be Blood actor recalled. “Ronan was just a kid; his younger brother Cashel took his first steps on Prince Edward Island. They were basically running around like savages on the beach while we were filming. But I was there fairly early on in that production, because I was working with the construction crew, learning how to build a house and make furniture. Apparently, somebody asked Ro, ‘So what does your father do for a living?’ And he said, “I don’t know, I think he’s in construction?’ [Laughs.]”
Daniel and Rebecca met in 1996 while he was working on a film adaptation of the stage play The Crucible, notably written by Rebecca’s father. They married that same year on November 13. The couple has two children, Ronan and Cashel. Daniel also has a son, Gabriel-Kane, with ex Isabelle Adjani.
