‘All of You’ Star Brett Goldstein Dishes on Leading His First Romance Movie

Brett Goldstein is no stranger to romantic roles — remember his Roy Kent and Juno Temple‘s Keeley Jones in Ted Lasso? — but All of You marks the actor’s first time leading a romance movie.
And the drama, which is now available to stream on Apple TV+, is about as swoony as it gets. In addition to cowriting the script, Goldstein plays Simon, who has unspoken feelings for Laura (Imogen Poots). In the movie, which takes place in a not-so-distant future, a test can reveal the identity of one’s soulmate. Simon opposes it, but Laura takes it anyway. The kicker? Her soulmate isn’t Simon, but she still feels an undeniable pull toward her best friend, even after she builds a life with her on-paper soulmate.
When Swooon caught up with Goldstein at All of You‘s New York City premiere, we asked what stepping into his first big romance role felt like. “Well, I loved making this film,” he answered. “I loved working with Imogen. She’s so wonderful and so open, and we really trusted each other, and we’re vulnerable with each other and all that. I don’t know, it was a great experience.”
Poots shared similar sentiments about her costar, explaining that they learned from each other throughout the filming process. “I think he’s a very, very curious person,” she added. “He’s very generous. He’s very interested in a genuine way, and I think that undeniably sometimes you do a job and it changes you a little bit.”
As for All of You‘s director and cowriter, William Bridges, he knew that Goldstein and Poots had chemistry right off the bat — so much that he didn’t have to do much besides put the camera on them. “It was an incredible thing to experience,” he said. “I think that it was the first time they met, you could feel that there was a connection there, like a friendship.”
He continued, “And then day one shooting it, I was like, yeah, [the chemistry] is there, which was a huge relief because they’re in every scene.”
We already know that All of You won’t be Goldstein’s last project as a romantic lead, though his upcoming movie with Jennifer Lopez is much more lighthearted. When we asked Goldstein about Office Romance, which he also wrote, the actor had just as many compliments about his next costar.
“We wrote it for her, me and Joe Kelly,” he said. “We wrote it because she’s the best rom-com actor, and day one, I was like, ‘We made the right decision,’” he continued, reiterating, “She’s f**king brilliant.”
