Alongside his Married at First Sight match, Josh Black was the first participant that viewers were introduced to in Season 19. The 31-year-old, who lives in Austin, Texas, like the rest of the group, believed that the reality show could lead to his perfect partner.

Being in a “secure, emotionally mature phase of life,” Josh felt ready for marriage. “Growing up without a steady family life, he’s eager to create the stable, loving family he always desired,” his bio reads. He took the leap in Episode 1, and in a few weeks, we’ll find out if he decided to stay in the relationship or get divorced. In just the first four episodes, Josh has revealed quite a bit of information about his background. Learn more about his parents, his job, and more.

What does Josh do for a living?

In Episode 1, Josh explained that he started his own roofing company. “I went from making $40,000 a year to half a million dollars in three years,” he said. “It’s still hard for me to grasp that because I came from nothing.” A couple of episodes later, Josh asked his new wife if she would be willing to sign a postnup at the request of his business partner.

Josh’s businessQuality Exteriors, is based in Austin. Per his website, he also runs Contractors for a Cause, a nonprofit that helps underprivileged children get access to sports and activities. “I believe every kid deserves the chance to be part of something bigger — just like every homeowner deserves to feel safe and secure under their roof,” he wrote.

What happened to Josh’s parents?

After his mom went to prison when he was three years old, Josh was raised by his grandparents — his Nana makes an appearance before and during his wedding in Episode 1. He describes coming from a “very, very, very poor background,” and he recalls knocking on neighbors’ doors when he was 8 years old, hoping to pick up odd jobs to pay for school clothes.

Though they kept in touch through letters and calls, Josh’s mom was imprisoned until he was 16. “I just learned to believe that I couldn’t really trust her,” he said. When his friends asked why he didn’t invite her to his wedding, Josh replied, “I love her and I care about her, but we’re just not on the level that I would want her here… I’m not bringing her around a family. I’m not bringing her around my children.”

Josh had also recently met his father for the first time. He took a DNA test, which put him in touch with his paternal aunt. While his dad sends him a text every morning, Josh decided that he didn’t know his dad well enough yet to invite him to his wedding, either.

What is Josh’s Instagram?

Josh’s username is @just.josh.black, but it looks like the Season 19 star is keeping his account private for now. Part of his Instagram bio reads, “What good was a mistake if it didn’t help you grow?”

Who did Josh marry on Married at First Sight Season 19?

The experts matched Josh with Jalyn Garcia, a 27-year-old realtor. As of Episode 4, the newlyweds haven’t had many bumps in the road while they’ve been getting to know each other.

Shortly after their own nuptials took place, Josh accompanied Jalyn to her mother’s — fellow MAFS participant Belynda — wedding. That night, Josh and Jalyn revealed that they had sex for the first time.

Are Josh and Jalyn still together?

When we last caught up with them in Episode 4, Josh and Jalyn were still together. Not only that, but Josh gave his wife a major ring upgrade during their honeymoon. Jalyn expressed some concern about lifestyle differences between herself and Josh, since the latter is more adventurous and outdoorsy, but it hasn’t caused a rift between them.
