Paul Wesley Forgets Ex-Wife Torrey DeVitto’s ‘Vampire Diaries’ Character
What To Know
- Paul Wesley, star of The Vampire Diaries, forgot who Dr. Meredith Fell was during a fan convention.
- Torrey DeVitto played Meredith, who appeared in the third season of the supernatural drama.
- DeVitto and Wesley were married from 2011 to 2013.
It’s been years since The Vampire Diaries ended its run, and a lot went down over the course of its eight seasons. It seems even star Paul Wesley can’t keep all of the details about the sprawling supernatural drama straight — including his ex-wife’s role.
A fan captured the moment that the Stefan Salvatore actor couldn’t recall the name of Torrey DeVitto‘s character, nor the pivotal part she played in The CW show. “When [Nina Dobrev‘s Elena] was dead, who made the decision to turn her into a vampire?” Wesley asked during a convention panel, sitting next to costar Ian Somerhalder.
In the video, a fan answers that DeVitto’s Dr. Meredith Fell was the one to put Damon’s (Somerhalder) blood in Elena’s system.
“Who the hell is Meredith?” Wesley said in response, earning laughs from the crowd. A few fans tried to help him out, explaining that she was the doctor who dated Alaric (Matthew Davis) in Season 3. In the season finale, “The Departed,” it’s revealed that Meredith gave Elena vampire blood to heal the injuries she sustained after being kidnapped by Klaus (Joseph Morgan). When Elena later crashes her car into a river (long story), Damon’s blood revives her.
Once his memory was jogged, Wesley said, “Oh, my ex-wife! I didn’t know her name was Meredith.”

DeVitto and Wesley, who were married from 2011 to 2013, shared the screen until the former exited after her appearance in the Season 4 premiere. Once Alaric (temporarily) died, Meredith’s character vanished, though her former love interest later revealed that she moved to Alaska with her new husband. In 2024, DeVitto revealed that she chose not to return after her split from Wesley.
“I was [on it], but I only did like six episodes. And then once we were splitting up I was like, ‘Pfft, not going back there,’” she said on Rachel Bilson‘s Broad Ideas podcast. “I’m not that kind of person that’s like, ‘Well, this is business, I can stay.’ It’s like, no. I don’t want to come back. I’m good, thank you.”
Wesley met the Pretty Little Liars alum on the set of a horror movie in 2007 before they tied the knot a few years later. When they divorced, Wesley’s rep said that they had “decided to amicably split,” and they would “continue to remain good friends,” according to People. During the aforementioned podcast appearance, DeVitto opened up about going through a “really dark time” post-split.
“It was [public],” she said. “It was the first time I did something like that. Because he was on a really big show that was really popular, so it did draw [attention].”
The actress has since married director Jared LaPine. They said “I do” a few months before welcoming their baby daughter, who was born in December 2o24. Wesley has been engaged to model Natalie Kuckenburg since September 2025, after about three years of dating. Before that, he was married to Ines de Ramon from 2019 until their separation in 2022, and their divorce became official in 2024. Wesley was in an on-again-off-again relationship with TVD’s Phoebe Tonkin from 2013 to 2017.
