Sidelined 2: Intercepted is just the beginning for Tubi’s new class of YA love stories.

In Swooon‘s exclusive first look at How to Lose a Popularity Contest, which you can watch for free on Tubi starting January 16, romance lovers get their first look at Ginny & Georgia‘s Sara Waisglass as organized perfectionist Ellie and TikTok star Chase Hudson as charming underachiever Nate. From a bathroom ambush to a tasteful amount of blackmail, it’s already clear that Ellie and Nate are a match made in, well, high school.

The sneak peek begins with Ellie, who “has accepted her fate as an unpopular high schooler looking forward to a future at a prestigious college where no one will call her ‘Max,’ the unfortunate nickname she received from Nate years ago.” As Ellie gazes at a picture in her locker, Nate comes up behind her, ominously exclaiming, “We need to talk.”

As Ellie darts into the girls’ bathroom, Nate follows her inside, asking, “You wrote my name on that list?” Turns out, Ellie put Nate in the running for Student Body president without consulting him first. She explains, “I did. I wrote it. But, you looked so sad in the diner and I figured if I signed you up for president, it would get Quinn’s attention.” Sounds like there’s a lot of history there.

“Well, thanks, Max,” Nate tells her. “It did get her attention, and now she hates me.” Much like Warner Huntington III wanted Elle Woods to get “serious” in Legally Blonde, it appears that Ellie was trying to make Nate look more “serious” in Quinn’s eyes. However, Nate explains, “She thinks I’m, like, trolling it or whatever.”

As Ellie puts it, “That’s an easy fix. Just take it seriously, do a great job, and win the election.” While Nate had come up with the same plan, he tells her, “I can’t do that on my own. You signed me up, right? So now, you’re going to help me.” We don’t know about you, but we just got chills.

This banter-filled, flirty rom-com cannot come soon enough. Check out exclusive pictures of Tubi’s newest YA movie, How to Lose a Popularity Contest, below, and be sure to watch Swooon‘s first look above if you want some serious butterflies.
