The former New York Yankee has been married only once, to his ex-wife, Cynthia Rodriguez Nicolas (née Scurtis), who appears in the documentary. How did Cynthia Scurtis and Alex Rodriguez meet?
Rodriguez met his first wife when he was 20 years old. Scurtis had just graduated from Ohio State University. They crossed paths at the Body and Soul gym in Coral Gables, Florida. At the time, Rodriguez was playing for the Seattle Mariners.
“I had no idea who he was,” Scurtis admitted in the first episode of the documentary. Rodriguez pursued Scurtis, and they eventually went out to dinner, where he told her they would end up getting married (and that he would “make a lot of money” one day, and she’d have to sign a prenup).
“I felt sorry for him,” Scurtis said of her first impression of her ex-husband. “He was a sweet guy. He had a really big heart, but he was so stunted when it came to the natural development of a person.” She noted he had “tunnel vision” when it came to baseball.

Why did Cynthia Scurtis and Alex Rodriguez split?
Cheating scandals plagued ARod’s marriage. Rodriguez’s ex-wife indirectly addressed his alleged affairs in the documentary. She said he was always “apologetic” and “not proud of his actions.” After a “similar scenario” following the birth of their second daughter, alluding to his rumored affair with Madonna, Scurtis and Rodriguez split.
Scurtis filed for divorce from Rodriguez on July 7, 2008. “It’s not that we were unhappy, but we were growing apart romantically,” Rodriguez said in Alex vs ARod.

He admitted “marriage is challenging” and added, “In hindsight, I could have been a better husband. I could have been more present. I could have been more loyal. I could have been more sympathetic, empathetic, all of it. You name it.” Scurtis said she felt a sense of “freedom” after their split.
In the divorce documents, Scurtis claimed their marriage was “irretrievably broken because of the husband’s extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct.”
Rodriguez has not married again. He notably dated Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz, and Torrie Wilson after his divorce. He got engaged to Jennifer Lopez in 2019, but they split in 2021.
Who is Cynthia Scurtis’ husband now?
Scurtis, now 52, found love again with real estate advisor Angel Nicolas, who is the founder of The Nicolas Group, in Florida. They are married and welcomed a daughter, Camilla, in 2016. On June 18, their anniversary, Nicolas penned a sweet Instagram message to his wife.
“Today I’m reminded that I’m the luckiest man alive! I get to do life with my partner, Cynthia Nicolas,” he began. “With you, I’ve found home, purpose, and a love that feels divinely guided. Grateful for your light, your heart, and the life we’re building together.”

Do Cynthia Scurtis and Alex Rodriguez have kids?
Scurtis and Rodriguez have two daughters. Their first child, Natasha, was born on November 18, 2004, followed by Ella on April 21, 2008. Natasha and Ella are both featured in the documentary.
After Scurtis and Rodriguez split, they established a coparenting routine amid the former baseball player’s busy schedule. “The girls, in order to see him, they have to travel, and they’re so small. So I would travel with them. He would come back and, if he had a day off, he would come. He was amazing when he was present. It’s just that those times were so select,” Scurtis said in the third episode of Alex vs ARod.
Today, Rodriguez and Scurtis have an amicable relationship. “You’ve always been a wonderful mother and role model to our two incredible daughters. You always put their needs first and have helped shape them into the strong young women they have become,” he wrote in honor of his ex-wife’s birthday in 2021.
“I’ve always said that when it comes to co-parenting, I’m extremely lucky because most people only have a 50-50 split of time with their kids. With us, it feels more like 100-100. Living in close proximity and working together despite busy schedules has allowed both of us to remain integral and active in the development of two young women whose future is limitless.
