Meghann Turner never considered not telling her full story on Married at First Sight.

After the show’s team of experts found her match, the 39-year-old realtor said “I do” to Derrek Wiedeman without ever meeting him beforehand. The couple hit a few bumps in the road at the start of the eight-week experiment — the Austinite said the season accurately represented her and what happened — but they ultimately worked through them.

When the couple found out they were pregnant, they chose to stay married when Decision Day arrived. “We had issues, but I had no doubts that I was going to stay married to him,” Meghann told Swooon over Zoom. “At that point, we were never fighting. It was really great at that moment.”

When Meghann joined the cast for the Season 19 reunion, which took place a year and a half after Decision Day, her circumstances had changed. She had a miscarriage three days after filming ended. “I think the decision to open up about it at the reunion was that it had already played out… Well, it didn’t play out, but everybody expected to find out or see pictures of our baby,” Meghann said. “I felt like I needed to talk about it. I needed to be able to tell my story; I just needed to talk about it. I needed to release it and everything.”

About a month after her miscarriage, Derrek ended their relationship. “I think that after the miscarriage and us moving back to my house, I think that he very much shut down, put up walls,” Meghann reflected. “And I wanted to work on it. We went to one couple’s therapy, and then he didn’t show up for the second one. I felt very isolated, already going through a miscarriage, and then isolated from the one person I considered my person.”

During the reunion, Derrek said he wasn’t happy with his wife and claimed Meghann wasn’t happy with him. When we asked if that was the case, Meghann explained, “There were definitely issues. I was also coming off of pregnancy hormones… and I had a miscarriage. I bled for three months. There was a lot going on. And so to say you’re not happy… Yeah, it wasn’t a great time, but I would have worked on it.”

Derrek broke up with his wife on the phone and had already gotten an Airbnb when he made the call. After the preceding fight, Meghann never saw him again until the reunion. Derrek had asked Meghann not to be there when he moved out, saying “that it would be too hard for [her] to see him moving out.” She continued, “He gave me like a week before he came to get his things because I was not ready to deal with that. I was shocked, devastated. We had just joined a pickleball league the morning of the fight. I needed a week to compose myself, and then he came and got his stuff.”

Though she was blindsided in the moment, Meghann said hindsight is 20/20. She said there were signs that Derrek was going to end things. “He was saying out-of-pocket things that were just weird and things that I was like, ‘That doesn’t make sense,'” she recalled, opting not to elaborate. “Look, I wish Derrek nothing but the best, you know? It was a year and a half ago… When you’re in the thick of it, you don’t realize, but then you look back and you’re like, well, okay, now I kind of see things, maybe things were askew.”

After their breakup, Meghann only heard from Derrek once. A couple of months had passed when Derrek sent her a text, which Meghann felt he had only sent because her friends ran into him. “They were like, ‘You haven’t reached out to her. That is the coldest thing. Like, that’s horrible,'” she said. “And so he wrote me this text that just basically was like, ‘I hope you’re doing well. I’m doing healthy things, blah, blah, blah. If you ever want to talk about it, we can.’”

In response, Meghann asked to meet and talk it out in person. “I also said, ‘Zoe [her dog] still sleeps on your side of the bed’ because she always slept next to him,” she continued, “and then I never got a response back.”

Their first face-to-face was at the reunion earlier this month. “It was overwhelming,” Meghann recalled of seeing Derrek again. “I dealt with the miscarriage, and that was terrible. And then basically being ghosted after a four-month relationship. I healed, but I don’t know if I really healed because I didn’t feel like I had closure. It was just like one day, your child, your baby, stripped from you. The next day, your husband is stripped from you. And then I just had to heal.”

The resulting discussion during the reunion was difficult, Meghann said, but necessary. “I think that [the reunion] was the exact closure I needed,” she explained. “As soon as I left there, I said everything that I needed to say. I felt so whole afterwards. I felt great afterwards. I got what I needed out. We ended it. We had the discussion. It’s over.”

Derrek has reached out since the reunion and said “that he was grateful for the way that I handled it and that he doesn’t ever want to see somebody in pain, and he really wishes the best for me and hopes I find somebody,” Meghann recalled. “Oh, and then he asked me for my rings back. Yeah, that was cute.”

Meghann still stands by what she said during the reunion, that she can remember the good alongside the bad, especially as she watches the show back. “I kept a diary of everything. I would keep a diary of if we had a fight, all the good stuff, everything,” she said. “And I appreciate that I was able to be in this process and to do this. I feel very lucky that the experts chose me.”

Now, with an “onward and upward” mentality, Meghann said that a new chapter is about to start for her. She’s ready to find love again. “I’m actually really excited about going on dates and everything. I went on dates, and I had some great dates,” she said. Meghann admitted that it is a little difficult knowing that the person she’s seeing will be able to watch her get married to somebody else on TV. Regardless, she’s ready to put herself out there.

After Married at First Sight, Meghann also knows what she wants in a relationship and partner. “I even was telling somebody the other day, I don’t even want to online date because Derrek would have never been somebody I would have ever chosen,” she said. “I would have swiped left. No offense. But it’s not the superficialness that I want. I want the real stuff. I don’t want just like, ‘Oh, you’re good looking, so let’s match.’ I want somebody who’s just a salt of the earth, really good human.”

Since the show wrapped up, Meghann’s also found a new community of women. “I cannot believe the amount of messages that are in my DMs about women who are going through it, and then friends that I didn’t even know who had miscarriages, who can relate,” she said. “It has been overwhelmingly great. So I’m very glad that we just went with, ‘This is what’s happening. This is our lives,’ you know?”
