[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers from Heated Rivalry Episodes 1-4.]

There was life before the Heated Rivalry club scene, and now there’s life after the Heated Rivalry club scene. Maybe the peak of Shane (Hudson Williams) and Ilya’s (Connor Storrie) romantic angst, it’s a moment that readers of author Rachel Reid’s book have been anticipating seeing on screen in the TV adaptation. They got what they wanted in Episode 4, though it played out a bit differently than some expected.

It seems to be the general consensus from fans — the Swooon team’s social media algorithm is entirely Heated Rivalry content, so we feel like we can make that assumption — that the final moments of Episode 4 are pretty much perfect television. After Shane hurts Ilya by pushing him away, they spot each other at the club. Shane is with his movie star girlfriend (Sophie Nélisse), so Ilya responds by dancing with the nearest woman, staring Shane down all the while. Naturally.

Like the book, Ilya’s move stops Shane dead in his tracks, but the hockey player has a much different reaction in the aftermath. Feeling sick upon seeing his rival-with-benefits, Shane leaves the club almost immediately after they make eye contact. The Heated Rivalry book only reveals what Ilya does immediately after their encounter: He tries to bring the woman home, but she says she has a boyfriend. He leaves alone, getting himself off once he gets there. So far, all the same.

It’s actually revealed in Reid’s sequel book, The Long Game, what Shane gets up to once he leaves the club. He drives home alone, but he has to pull over because he can’t see through his tears. Jealous, confused, devastated, and scared, Shane remembers feeling like he should’ve gone home with Rose, but he was too hung up on a certain Russian hockey player.

Ahead of the episode, some fans hoped that the scene would make it into the series, even if the reveal doesn’t happen in the first book. “The fate of Canada lowkey rests on tonight’s episode because if we dont get shane hollander crying so hard he has to pull his car over i will be blowing it up,” one user exaggerated on X. Other fans responded with similar fervor in the replies, especially after the episode aired. “I can’t F***ING BELIEVE THEY LEFT THIS OUT,” one added, while another said, “Umm when do we ride.”

In another X post that’s garnered thousands of likes, a user said, “I can’t believe we lost Shane pulling over to the side of the road and crying because he realizes he loves Ilya and he had to see him at the club with another person. The loss of my life.”

Episode 4’s ending offers fans a different kind of angst: Shane does take Rose home, but while they’re doing the deed, the camera zooms in on Shane’s face, while a particular lyric from Harrison’s “All the Things She Said” remix plays: “This is not enough.” It cuts between Shane getting intimate with Rose and Ilya getting himself off in his shower, ending on a close-up of the hockey players’ tormented faces. Not enough, indeed.
