What To Know

  • Netflix has acquired the rights to adapt Jasmine Guillory’s romance novel The Wedding Date.
  • The story centers around a woman who poses as a stranger’s plus one at his ex’s wedding.
  • Tracy Oliver will adapt, with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attached as producers.

We are truly living in the rom-com renaissance, with Off Campus, Twisted Love, Butcher & Blackbird, and more book-to-screen adaptations finally getting their time in the sun. Now, Netflix has announced the next BookTok favorite romance novel getting brought to life. Care for a wedding, anyone?

On December 16, Netflix revealed that it had acquired Jasmine Guillory’s The Wedding Date, the first novel in her six-novel romance series. The Wedding Date follows Alexa Monroe and Drew Nichols, two semi-workaholics whose chance encounter leads to Drew asking Alexa to be his plus one at his ex’s wedding that weekend. If this news couldn’t get any better, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — yes, that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — are attached to the movie as producers!

“Fun news to share today! Super excited for this! Thrilled to be working with Netflix, Tracy Oliver, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex!!!” Guillory wrote on Instagram.

What is Netflix’s The Wedding Date about?

According to Deadline, which broke the news about the upcoming Wedding Date adaptation, the movie “sees a chance elevator encounter on the part of a career-driven political strategist lead to posing as a stranger’s wedding date. While the strategist had stopped believing in romance, she discovers that love has a way of showing up when you least expect it.”

While that’s all that’s been released about the movie now, we can predict a bit more about the plot from Jasmine Guillory’s novel, which follows the love story between Alexa Monroe and Drew Nichols. As Guillory puts it, “Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with in an elevator is something Alexa Monroe wouldn’t normally do. But there’s something about Drew Nichols that’s too hard to resist.”

At the same time, “On the eve of his ex’s wedding festivities, Drew is minus a plus one. Until a power outage strands him with the perfect candidate for a fake girlfriend…” Once their paths cross, “Alexa and Drew have more fun than they ever thought possible, [but] Drew has to fly back to Los Angeles and his job as a pediatric surgeon, and Alexa heads home to Berkeley, where she’s the mayor’s chief of staff. Too bad they can’t stop thinking about the other… They’re just two high-powered professionals on a collision course toward the long-distance dating disaster of the century–or closing the gap between what they think they need and what they truly want…”
