Over the past two seasons, fans have become well-acquainted with Ruby and James, watching their angsty star-crossed romance unfold in Maxton Hall — The World Between Us. Like author Mona Kasten’s trilogy (which the show is based on), Ruby and James’ relationship faces obstacle after obstacle — of their own and others’ making — but they also get some happy moments. (They’re few and far between, but they are there.)
While Season 2 shares a number of similarities with Kasten’s Save You, one of the book’s lighter scenes didn’t make it on screen. In the book, after meeting Ruby’s family for the first time, James partakes in their game night. So, when Maxton Hall cast members Herbig-Matten and Hardung stopped by the Swooon studio, we took it upon ourselves to make the book scene (partially) come to life. After the stars broke down RubyJames’ relationship timeline in full, we had them play Swooon‘s Knock Your Blocks Off.
There’s a reason Knock Your Blocks Off is one of Swooon‘s favorite games. Every time they pulled one of the heart-shaped blocks from the tower, they answered the romance-related question written on it. What’s Herbig-Matten’s biggest green flag? “I think talking about your feelings and being honest,” Herbig-Matten revealed.
Who was Hardung’s first movie crush? Twihards, it’s time to celebrate. It was Twilight star Kristen Stewart! Does Herbig-Matten believe in soulmates? “No, I wouldn’t say that,” she admitted. Hardung sweetly teased his costar over her answer. When Herbig-Matten was asked about her love language, Hardung noted that it’s “words of affirmation,” and she agreed, adding physical touch as well.
