What To Know

  • Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have announced their separation after nearly nine years together.
  • The couple shares an eight-year-old son named Lars.
  • The announcement follows the loss of their home in the L.A. wildfires.

After nearly a decade together, American-born Australian actor Mel Gibson and screenwriter Rosalind Ross have separated.

In a joint statement to People, the couple wrote, “Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible.”

While Gibson, 69, and Ross, 35, quietly split about a year ago, the exes have continued to coparent their son, Lars. While Lars is Gibson’s youngest, he has nine children whose ages range from 45 to 8. As of writing, Gibson and Ross have not confirmed the reason behind their split.

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross met through mutual friends in 2014, starting their relationship soon after. In January 2017, the couple showed off Ross’s baby bump on the red carpet at the Golden Globes. At the time, a close friend revealed to People, “Mel and Rose are so excited about the baby. Mel loves being a dad, and he and Rose can’t wait to be parents together. The last two years have been some of his happiest years he’s ever had.” Weeks after the Golden Globes, the couple welcomed Lars.

The news of Gibson and Ross’s split came nearly a year after the couple lost their home in the Los Angeles wildfires, back in January. After learning that his house had been lost, Gibson confirmed that Ross was safe, explaining, “The good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well, and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way, that’s all I can care about, really.”

At this time, the couple has yet to make individual statements about their split. That being said, eight weeks before the announcement, Gibson wrote on his official Instagram page, “The divorce rate is way too high, let’s love genuinely and stay loyal to our spouse.”
