‘When Calls the Heart’: Kevin McGarry on Nathan’s Goal for ‘Moving Forward’ With Elizabeth

During Nathan (Kevin McGarry) and Elizabeth’s (Erin Krakow) time in Cape Fullerton, Nathan met Charlotte Thornton (Brooke Shields) for the first time. This was a huge step for Nathan, getting to know Little Jack’s (Hyland Goodrich) grandmother.
The When Calls the Heart Season 13 premiere showed Nathan and Charlotte getting along right off the bat. Having Charlotte’s blessing and support regarding his relationship with Elizabeth is pivotal for Nathan moving forward. McGarry spoke with Swooon about Nathan and Charlotte’s dynamic in the episodes to come as he continues to build his life with Elizabeth.
“I think it means the world to Nathan,” McGarry said. “That is another story that we will unpack as the season goes on. We get a bit of a taste of it in the first episode, but that throughline of proving himself to Charlotte will be something we kind of return to throughout the season. It’s a nice little taste at the beginning, but it does mean a lot to Nathan to feel accepted by Charlotte moving forward with Elizabeth.”

McGarry noted that Nathan is well aware that Charlotte is a tough critic, especially when it comes to Elizabeth and Little Jack. She only wants the best for her late son’s wife and her grandchild. “She is kind of a battleaxe. She is a tough-as-nails lady,” McGarry admitted.
Despite Elizabeth, Nathan, Little Jack, and Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller) leaving Cape Fullerton to return to Hope Valley, Charlotte will be back this season. McGarry teased that Shields “delivered some amazing stuff that we get to see as the season goes on.”
As the season progresses, Nathan will remain a supportive partner to Elizabeth. “Nathan is always just trying to remind Elizabeth that she doesn’t have to go it alone,” Krakow previously told Swooon. “Elizabeth has been a single mom for many years, and I mean, obviously, she has a lot of help from her friends in Hope Valley. But Nathan is quick to remind her that he can be her rock. He’s going to be there for not just Elizabeth, but Little Jack as well.”
