[Warning: The below contains spoilers for The Long Game by Rachel Reid.]
Heated Rivalry Season 1 has come and gone, so that means it’s time to study up on The Long Game, author Rachel Reid’s continuation of Shane (Hudson Williams) and Ilya’s (Connor Storrie) romance. Her first book about the rival hockey players-turned-lovers is all about that slow burn — it takes Shane and Ilya eight long, painful years before they admit any sort of deeper feelings for each other. Let’s just say, while their emotional communication is severely lacking most of the time, their physical language is not.
When it comes to the book and its TV adaptation — which is pretty much entirely accurate to its source material — Heated Rivalry lives up to its title. Over a dozen chapters feature some unbelievably spicy scenes, and Reid does not skimp on the details. She had a high bar to clear with her sequel book, but the author manages to make The Long Game even hotter (and angstier, despite Shane and Ilya being an official couple, but we won’t get into that quite yet).
Even if there are slightly fewer sex scenes, Shane and Ilya step up their game in their sequel. From Ilya deciding to use Shane’s trophy room for sexy times to Shane figuring out he has a bit of an exhibitionism kink during an All-Star weekend, we’ve made this nifty guide to all of Hollanov’s hottest moments ahead of Heated Rivalry Season 2. Brace yourselves, because it’s about to get seriously spicy in here:
Chapter 5
Night club scene 2.0! After Shane and Ilya make a rare public outing to Fabian’s (another Game Changers character) concert, the sensuality of the performance gets them all hot and bothered. They’ve gone a week without sex, so that adds to their desperation. On the way home, Ilya teases Shane with his fingers while he drives. When they finally get home, Ilya puts his mouth to work. Shane, who’s learning Russian, tells Ilya that he’s ready for him using the latter’s mother tongue. (Hot.) Shane starts out top before Ilya flips them, and you can guess what happens after that.
Chapter 8
Hockey as foreplay? We’re here for it. Shane cheekily steals Ilya’s signature move during a game and winks at the camera, which annoys Ilya to no end. They video call afterward, and Shane tells his boyfriend that he wants a reward. So, Ilya puts Shane in charge. Shane instructs Ilya to get himself close, but Ilya makes Shane put on his glasses before they get too far. (Yep, the famous glasses make a comeback.) Shane tries out some dirty talk, and Ilya comes twice in a row. (Yes, seriously.)
Chapter 11
Shane and Ilya are in the same city to play against each other, so you bet they make the most of it. After flirting during a face-off, Shane distracts Ilya with an uncharacteristic innuendo. Later on, Ilya gets a puck to the knee — he jokes that he won’t be kneeling later — and faces another hurdle when he gets stuck in traffic on the way to Shane’s. Shane, ever efficient, preps himself so they don’t waste any time, texting Ilya all the while. Ilya takes control — we get our first “good boy” here — telling Shane to edge himself a few times. When Ilya does arrive, they don’t waste any time going all the way.
Chapter 13
Happy Halloween… or not. A gladiator costume-clad Ilya hosts a party for the Ottawa Centaurs at his house. It sounds like a fun premise, but Ilya, feeling alone and missing Shane, isn’t doing well emotionally. When his boyfriend surprises him with a visit — after everyone’s left, of course — Ilya hides his feelings. And Shane does distract him, especially once he reveals that he had a plug in for the duration of the drive. Shane goes down on Ilya first, and they end up going at it so hard that the couch slides across the floor. But what’s one of the spiciest scenes in the whole book has a devastating end. Ilya bursts into tears as Shane drives away.
Chapter 15
OK, this one doesn’t turn into a full-blown sex scene after, but it needs to be included. Shane dreams of Ilya and himself getting it on at center ice. Shane wakes up totally turned on, and Ilya notices after waking up. He forces an embarrassed Shane to share his fantasy. Jacob Tierney, may we request a dream sequence, please and thank you?
Chapter 20
Shane and Ilya fool around in Ilya’s fitness room in Chapter 20. Shane’s trying to get a workout in, but gets distracted when Ilya sits on the weight rack. The room is surrounded by mirrors, which gives Ilya an absolutely stellar idea. He decides to make Shane watch himself while Ilya gets him off. Before they get too far, Ilya dims the lights to make Shane feel less self-conscious. He got them installed in his gym because Shane has them in his. (How sweet is that?) What’s more, our thoughtful king only focuses on Shane’s pleasure instead of his own.

Chapter 25
A lot goes down between Chapters 20 and 25. Ilya thinks he’s going to die when his plane’s engine fails, and sends some last words to Shane. Ilya’s experience makes Shane realize what’s really important. He proposes to Ilya, which leads to what’s by far the most tender sex scene of the entire book. They take their time as they grind against each other. In their post-coital bliss, Shane suggests going public with their relationship in the summer.
Chapter 27
We love an All-Star weekend. After Shane beats Ilya in the speed competition, they have a rendezvous in a hotel room. (Just like old times!) Ilya takes his time with Shane, kissing him everywhere and teasing his boyfriend for a good while. He’s in total control, indulging in some rimming first. Midway, Cliff Marlow (ugh, that guy) knocks on the door, but the prospect of getting caught only turns Shane on more. Ilya continues fingering Shane while they hear their fellow players in the hallway. Shane and Ilya don’t let that stop them from going to pound town.
Chapter 30
After Ilya plays in Ottawa’s Pride game, he and Shane get intimate at home. First, Shane sucks Ilya off in the shower. (Classic.) Sensing that Ilya needs to be taken apart further, Shane reverses their typical roles in the bedroom, fingering and rimming Ilya. He’s occasionally into some backdoor stuff, we come to find out.
Chapter 34
After Shane and Ilya are outed accidentally, Shane’s team reacts badly to his relationship. Also fearing their upcoming meeting with the NHL commissioner, Shane tasks Ilya with making him forget about all of their problems. Ilya thinks Shane needs a reminder of who he is, so he takes his boyfriend to his trophy room.
Ilya, bending Shane over a chair, hypes his boyfriend up. But Ilya being Ilya, he has to torture Shane a little first, making him wait while he gets lube… and a vibrating c**k ring. “I feel like I am f**king a king right now,” Ilya says once he returns. “You are Shane f**king Hollander. If you ever forget that, I will drag you back in here and f**k you until you remember.” Never have more iconic words been spoken.
We weren’t kidding about the steam, right? The trophy room isn’t where The Long Game ends, but it is Hollanov’s final and most memorable spicy scene. But that’s our opinion — which moment do you think is hottest? Tell us in the comments below!
