We’ve missed you, Chenford! After waiting nearly eight months, Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), along with the rest of our favorite Rookie characters, will be back for Season 8.
Chenford’s slow burn romance has been one of the many highlights of The Rookie, and they’ve made many strides in their relationship over the past few seasons. With The Rookie’s return on January 6, Swooon has compiled the ultimate Chenford refresher as Season 8 gets underway.
Is Chenford back together in The Rookie Season 8?
Going into The Rookie Season 8, Chenford’s relationship status is a little unclear. Lucy and Tim love each other, but are they on the same page about moving forward? That’s the ultimate question fans needed answered in Season 8.
Showrunner Alexi Hawley spoke with TV Insider ahead of the Season 8 premiere about Chenford’s future, and it’s looking bright. “I’ve gone on the record saying that Chenford fans should be happy this coming season, and I stand by that, but I do think that at the end of the day, Lucy still needs a conversation,” he said.

When it comes to Chenford, Hawley is a major proponent of taking his time with these characters. “I really love that we took the time to do that, even though it might’ve been a little infuriating to some people, but I think it needed to be earned. And so I think obviously this first episode is going to be cathartic and then we’ll see where we go from there,” he noted.
What happened to Chenford at the end of Season 7?
The Season 7 finale featured a major Chenford moment, but it didn’t play out exactly how fans wanted. After Tim broke up with Lucy in Season 6, the road to Chenford’s reconciliation was long and angst-ridden, though we did get some steamy hookups.
By the end of Season 7, Tim was ready to discuss their future. “I know the damage I did,” Tim said, referring to when he ended things with Lucy. “And after a lot of therapy, I know why I did it. I’ve been doing the work to fix what’s been broken inside me, so you can trust me when I tell you, Lucy, I will never hurt you like that again.”
He continued, “If we’re going to get back together, I think we should take the next step, and you should move in with me…” Before he could finish, Tim realized that Lucy was asleep and didn’t hear most of what he’d said about their future.
“Tim’s trying to make up for lost time. He screwed things up when he broke up abruptly, so I’m not mad at the choice, but it was bold, that’s for sure,” Winter previously told Swooon.
Have Lucy and Tim said “I love you” yet?
Tim was the first one to say “I love you.” In the second episode of Season 6, Lucy asked Tim if he loved her while he was taking a lie detector test. “Yes, I love you,” he replied, and the lie detector test showed he was telling the truth. Later in the episode, Lucy said “I love you” back to Tim.
During the wildfire in Season 7, Lucy and Tim confessed their love for each other again when they thought they were going to die together. “Of course I still love you!” Tim told Lucy as the fire raged around them, which prompted Lucy to admit she still loved him, too.
What is the age gap between Lucy and Tim?
There’s a 10-year age gap between Tim and Lucy. Per a photo of hospital tags shared by O’Neil in a TikTok video, Tim was born on September 25, 1978, making him 47 years old. Lucy was born on March 24, 1988, making her 37 years old.
