Elizabeth Smart is telling her story in the new Netflix documentary Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart. Now 38, Smart was just 14 when she was abducted from her bedroom by Brian David Mitchell. She spent nine months being raped and abused by her kidnapper before authorities were able to locate and rescue her.

But while the inspirational speaker and author’s teen years were defined by her 2002 kidnapping, she has come a very long way and now has a husband and family of her own. Scroll down to learn more about Smart’s marriage, kids, and more.

What does Matthew Gilmour do for a living?

Gilmour is the co-founder of Park City Host, a vacation rental and property management company in Utah. He founded the company in 2013 with his partner, Luke Walker.

Per his bio on the company’s website, “Matthew has always had an affinity with the natural beauty and splendor of the Mountains. This appreciation subsequently led him to fall in love with Park City, which has been his hometown for over 10 years now. As an owner and operator of Park City Host Matthew knows exactly what it takes to be a successful businessman, husband, and devoted father. Matthew’s dedication to the things he loves is the foundation of the Park City Host culture and is reflected in his work and commitment to his clients.”

How did Elizabeth Smart meet her husband?

Smart and Gilmour met in 2009 while she was in Paris on a Mormon mission trip. Gilmour, who is from Scotland, knew nothing about Smart’s complicated past.

“The thing that attracted me the most to her — at the beginning and now — is how confident she is, especially considering everything she has been through,” he previously told People. They began an overseas friendship that eventually turned romantic, and Gilmour proposed in January 2012 in Utah.

The pair’s wedding took place just one month later in Oahu, Hawaii. The location was meaningful to the Smart family because it was where they spent time while Elizabeth dealt with the aftermath of her kidnapping.

Smart was 24 years old and a senior at Brigham Young University when she and Gilmour tied the knot. He was 22.

Does Elizabeth Smart have kids?

Smart and Gilmour have three children. Their daughter, Chloé, was born in February 2015, followed by son James in April 2017 and daughter Olivia in November 2018.

Smart has been open with her children about her kidnapping. “With all my children, really, I certainly never want to hide what happened in the past because every single one of us has a past,” she said in an interview with E! News.

However, she doesn’t share every piece of the story with them “all at once,” noting that her stories are “age-appropriate, to the best of my ability.”

“They could tell you the overarching story of what happened, but they couldn’t tell you details,” she added in a 2024 interview with People. “Now it’s to a point that I just say, ‘If and when you want to talk about it more, we can.’ And they seem pretty content with where they’re at right now. And I guess I’ll just take it day by day as it comes.”
