What To Know

  • Sutton Foster’s Younger character Liza’s romantic ending on the show was open-ended.
  • Hilary Duff revealed in a new interview who she wanted Liza to end up with.
  • Throughout the series, Liza was in a love triangle with Nico Tortorella’s Josh and Peter Hermann’s Charles.

Hilary Duff reflected on her time working on Younger in a new interview. The singer watched back clips from some of her biggest projects, including one from the TV Land-turned-Hulu series Younger, which ended in 2021.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Duff, who played Kelsey Peters, reflected on costar Sutton Foster‘s character Liza’s ending on the show. Throughout the series, Liza was in relationships with Josh (Nico Tortorella) and Charles (Peter Hermann). She broke up with Charles for good in the final season, and the finale left her storyline a bit open-ended. Although she approached Josh in a bar, mimicking the scene from the series premiere when they first met, it wasn’t confirmed whether she ended up with her younger suitor.

“I was more disappointed in Liza’s ending,” Duff admitted. “I like that she chose herself, but I always had big feels around who she should’ve ended up with.” While Duff didn’t specify whether Josh or Charles was her favorite for Liza, she did say, “I choose them both for certain reasons.”

However, it was neither of those men whom Duff would’ve ultimately picked for Liza. “I think I maybe would’ve liked to see a new person show up and her be settled and find love in a new person,” the “Mature” singer said. “I feel like it ended abruptly.”

Younger’s creator, Darren Star, recently told Deadline that he knew how Liza’s romantic storyline would end from the beginning. “It wasn’t a definitive choice, but there is definitely a full circle feeling to it,” he explained.

In 2025, Younger was added to Netflix, which introduced it to a new audience four years after the series finale. Star admitted that he hasn’t been approached about a potential revival just yet, but expressed interest in the possibility.

“It’s something I would be very excited to pursue, and just in these conversations I’ve had with the cast, it’s something they would be excited to do if the timing was right for everyone,” he said. “I have to say, the cast had the most amazing chemistry with each other, and it was a real delightful experience for all of us to make that show together.”

Duff opened up about Younger’s resurgence during her interview on the Therapuss podcast in November 2025. “That show was always like the little engine that could,” she said. “I felt like people that saw it loved it, but not too many people knew about it, but it went on for, like, seven years. It was a very long-running show. People loved it. But when it was finally on Netflix a year ago, or something, everybody thought it was a new show. It was really fun to have everyone fall in love with it all over again.”
