What is the bath scene in Bridgerton?
In the book, the bath scene gives Sophie and Benedict some much-needed emotional relief. Some context: When Araminta discovers Sophie is back in Mayfair, she has her arrested for stealing her shoe clips. Of course, Benedict swoops in to save the day as soon as he finds out, with his mother and Posy’s help.
When the trio and Araminta arrive at the jail, Posy reveals that Araminta stole Sophie’s dowry, which her father left her upon his death. Violet puts Araminta in her place by threatening legal action if she doesn’t officially recognize Sophie as Penwood’s ward. So, not only is Sophie cleared of all charges, but she also now has some social status.
Back at Benedict’s house, Sophie gets some time alone with her lover — at this point, they’ve already slept together for the first time. Before things take a steamy turn, Benedict assures Sophie that he had already resolved to marry her, regardless of her social status. They exchange I love yous, and at long last, everything is out in the open.
Since Sophie’s still grimy from spending a couple of nights in jail, Benedict offers to get a bath going for the two of them. It’s not proper for them to even be alone, but Benedict insists, and Sophie doesn’t need much convincing. After all she’s been through, she deserves to indulge.

After Sophie gets in the tub, Benedict follows. As he washes Sophie, Benedict confesses he’s dreamed of doing so ever since the masquerade. When they get out, Benedict offers to wait until their wedding, which will take place in a few days, to get intimate. Sophie urges him not to. Benedict, who says she’s already his wife in his heart, carries her to the bed.
As they get down to business, Sophie shares that she loved him even before she knew him. She sensed something magical in the air at the masquerade ball, like they were destined to meet. Sophie feels like it’s different than last time they slept together, because now, they’ve finally chosen each other.
