Out of This World Romance: Inside Ballantine’s ‘Atmosphere’ Planetarium Pop-Up

What To Know

  • Ballantine Books hosted an Atmosphere-themed Valentine’s planetarium pop-up at Liberty Science Center.
  • Attendees enjoyed 1980s music, custom crosswords, and exclusive swag.
  • Atmosphere follows Joan Goodwin, one of the first female astronauts at NASA.

From book clubs and signings to author readings and activations, it’s clear that readers crave in-person community events more than ever. That’s why Swooon was thrilled to attend the Atmosphere pop-up at the Liberty Science Center’s After Dark Valentine’s Day event, hosted by Ballantine Books.

As part of the Atmosphere Valentine’s planetarium event series, the Atmosphere pop-up at Liberty Science Center’s After Dark event transformed the center’s Observation Tower into an immersive Valentine’s celebration inspired by Taylor Jenkins Reid‘s bestselling novel. Seeing as the Observation Tower is not typically open to the public, the event also provided readers with a rare 360-degree view of the New York City skyline, which would have both Joan and Vanessa in awe.

Atmosphere recently surpassed one million copies sold, so it’s no surprise that readers flooded the Liberty Science Center to celebrate Joan and Vanessa’s love story. At the event, a live DJ spun tracks from the 1980s mixed with Atmosphere audiobook quotes as readers completed custom crosswords for a chance to win one of two signed copies of Atmosphere.

Of course, everyone went home with Atmosphere x Liberty Science Center swag, including bookmarks, constellation postcards, space pens, dehydrated ice-cream sandwiches, and space-themed pins.

While there was plenty of bookish fun to be had in the Observation Tower, readers got to explore the entire science museum after hours, sipping on smoking specialty cocktails like “The Atmosphere,” the top-seller of the night. (If you were wondering, Taylor Jenkins Reid’s stunning novel tastes like a delicious mix of Tito’s Vodka, Peach Schnapps, and grapefruit juice!)

We closed out the night by watching the Liberty Science Center’s Sabrina Carpenter Laser Show, a full audio-visual experience set to the “Manchild” singer’s epic discography. While we know that Joan has a soft spot for the musical stylings of the Sesame Street cast, we know she would have partied down to Short n’ Sweet.
