What To Know

  • Season 3 of XO, Kitty will focus on Kitty Covey navigating the challenges of her final year at KISS.
  • One of those is Kitty’s evolving relationship with Min Ho.
  • In an interview with Swooon, new showrunner Valentina Garza teases what’s in store for Kitty in Season 3.

Fans have become well acquainted with Kitty Covey’s (Anna Cathcart) particular brand of messiness over the past two seasons of Netflix’s XO, Kitty. In its upcoming third season, the KISS chaos queen is still up to her antics, but viewers will notice a shift.

After serving as a writer on Season 2, Valentina Garza was tapped as Season 3’s showrunner, taking over from Jessica O’Toole. Garza, who also serves as XO, Kitty‘s executive producer and writer, told Swooon what she wanted to do differently with Kitty’s story this time around.

“As Kitty entered her final year at KISS, I really thought about this as a moment where she’s stepping into adulthood,” Garza told Swooon. “They’re all on the precipice of adulthood, and so I thought it was really important to really embrace that and embrace the tension of almost being an adult and having our characters really have a growth journey, as these people who are living in the tensions and this really difficult transition in life.”

When we meet her in Season 3, Kitty has a lengthy to-do list (which she calls her “Senior Sunset List”). On the academic front, she has to apply to college and keep her grades up. As for friendship and family, she wants to make memories and grow closer to them. And — probably most importantly to XO, Kitty‘s romance-loving fanbase — she’s going to figure out where she stands with Min Ho (Sang Heon Lee).

Kitty’s had a number of love interests since Season 1, including Dae (Choi Min-yeong) and Yuri (Gia Kim). Kitty explores her feelings for both of them, but they’re both in the friend zone when we leave the characters in Season 2. After she realizes she returns Min Ho’s feelings in the Season 2 finale (which Garza wrote), Min Ho has become Kitty’s first priority. Though, as the trailer teases, it might not be as easy as simply telling Min Ho that she’s had a change of heart.

“I think that Kitty is absolutely experiencing a lot of different kinds of loves, not necessarily all romantic this season, but I think she does have romance in her life,” Garza said. “She also has the love of her friends… So we get to see her experience love in that way, and also just the love that she has for her family, and really wanting to be a unifier in her family space. So I think that we absolutely see Kitty experiencing a myriad of different types of loves.”

The showrunner continued, “I think that when Kitty started in Season 1, she was just this meddling matchmaker who thought she had love figured out for everybody else.” Don’t worry, though: Kitty hasn’t dropped her trademark matchmaking tendencies entirely in Season 3. One of the items on her list is to pair up her Korean cousin, Jiwon (Hojo Shin), with her teacher, Alex (Peter Thurnwald).

“I think this season, we’re really seeing [Kitty] turn that lens inward, and yes, it’s very messy, but she’s going to find that life rarely follows a script, right?” Garza continued. “Life and love don’t follow a script, so she has to just learn to lean into the unexpected.”

The unexpected presents some hurdles for Kitty and Min Ho in Season 3, and fans will have to wait and see if they can lean into them together. “Our cast and crew just worked so hard, and we’re so proud of the work that we did in Season 3,” Garza said. “Right now, we’re just really excited for the fans to see it and to see how they react.”
