What To Know

  • Could Bridgerton‘s Season 5 love story determine the next prequel spinoff? Why Franchaela’s romance could pair well with the rumored Violet spinoff.
  • We break down the connective elements between Violet and Francesca’s stories that could make way for the next series.

Bridgerton‘s fifth season has found its leading ladies as Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza step into the spotlight for Francesca and Michaela’s love story, but could that announcement hint at a long-rumored spinoff?

As fans know, Bridgerton may chronicle the stories depicted in Julia Quinn’s novels, but that doesn’t mean the door is closed to new stories in the Regency era world captured onscreen with the addition of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Shonda Rhimes recently hinted that, should a spinoff for Bridgerton be on the horizon, it would make the most sense if it focused on the family matriarch, Lady Violet (Ruth Gemmell).

“I mean, I think that’s an area that we’re excited about and know that that could be really rich and really mined well,” Rhimes had stated about the possibility of a Violet spinoff. “I’ve always said that I thought if we were gonna do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about. The Bridgerton mom, so yeah, that’s a possibility.”

Now that we know Francesca’s romance with Michaela will be the central plot of Season 5, there’s never been a better time to pick up Violet’s story for further exploration. One thing between Francesca and Violet is their shared experience as widows, which viewers got a taste of in Season 4, but could bridge the gap between Seasons 4 and 5, or Season 5 could be a perfect lead-in for Violet’s second chance at love as she continues to delve deeper into finding romance after her years-long love with late husband Edmund (Rupert Evans).

The overlapping elements of Francesca and Violet’s stories only make the reasoning for a spinoff stronger, but there are other potential plots from a prequel that could serve to enhance the Franchaela romance in the flagship show. One particular plot that could be revisited in a Violet spinoff is the romance between the King and Queen’s footmen, Reynolds (Freddie Dennis) and young Brimsley (Sam Clemmett).

Perhaps there’s a world in which that story touched Violet in the past, impacting her already progressive outlook. While this is merely our own theorizing, it’s not a stretch to say there’s room to explore Violet’s story because Bridgerton is shifting its Season 5 focus to Francesca’s romance.
