‘Invincible’: Will Debbie & Nolan Get Back Together? What the Comics Say

The threats are greater than ever in Invincible Season 4, but that hasn’t stopped plenty of relationship drama from unfolding. Mark (Steven Yeun) and Eve’s (Gillian Jacobs) romantic hurdles are definitely taking center stage in the show, but Mark’s mom (Sandra Oh) has some of her own to figure out. (Warning: Invincible Season 4 spoilers ahead!)
At the start of Season 4, Debbie is still with her regular, non-superhero boyfriend Paul (Cliff Curtis), and she’s even planning on moving in with him. However, her ex-husband, Nolan/Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), is still lingering in the back of her mind. Co-showrunner Simon Racioppa told Variety, “She was with him for over 20 years. Even now, it’s been a couple years since she’s seen him last, but that doesn’t just go away.”
What’s more, Oh teased that a Nolan and Debbie reunion is coming. The actress told ScreenRant, “I think dramatically, no matter what, it has to happen. Just dramaturgically, this confrontation does have to happen because Debbie’s place as the heartbeat and the humanity of not only herself, but for her children, and also a reminder of humanity, is really important.”
It got us thinking about Debbie’s romantic endgame. Is it possible for Nolan, who’s already undergoing a redemption arc in the show, to reconcile with Debbie after everything? At the end of Season 1, when Nolan revealed that he was only on Earth to prepare it for the Vilrumite takeover, he also claimed that Debbie was a “pet” to him.
We took to creator Robert Kirkman‘s Invincible comics to see if Nolan and Debbie end up together, somehow. Find out Debbie’s romantic endgame — and how her relationship with Paul shakes out.
Does Debbie end up with Paul in the Invincible comics?
Paul has a much smaller role in the comics compared to the show, but the source material does have Debbie and Paul ultimately break up. When Nolan returns to Earth to find allies for the Viltrumite War, he overhears Debbie end things with Paul over the phone. A reason for their split isn’t given — so we’ll have to wait and see if the show follows that storyline and fleshes it out.
Do Debbie and Nolan end up together in the Invincible comics?
Debbie and Nolan do manage to rekindle their romance, but not immediately. During that aforementioned reunion, Nolan apologizes, but she doesn’t forgive him. Over time, though, she sees that he’s changed. Nolan puts his life on the line trying to protect Earth from his fellow Viltrumites, kicking off a slow path to forgiveness. After the war, they get back together, and Nolan spends the rest of his life trying to prove his love for Debbie.
