Yes, Lauren and Bobby were dating at the time of her death. It’s unclear when their relationship started, but we know Carolyn was friendly with Bobby. She attended Revlon’s Fire and Ice Ball with Bobby and his sister, Maria Shriver, in December 1998.
Lauren was on the plane with John and Carolyn because she was headed to Martha’s Vineyard. “Lauren had begun seeing Bobby Shriver, who would be on the Vineyard, and she was meeting some friends there,” Elizabeth Beller wrote in Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, the book on which Love Story is based.

The plan was for John and Carolyn to drop Lauren off at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport before they flew to Hyannis Port for Rory Kennedy’s wedding weekend. Lauren, John, and Carolyn never showed up because their plane crashed in the Atlantic Ocean just before 10 pm. ET. The cause of the crash was later determined to be pilot error.
Bobby has never spoken of his relationship with Lauren in the 26 years since her death. However, he did attend a memorial service for Lauren, Carolyn, and John, along with a small group of other family members at Christ Church Greenwich in Connecticut. He spoke at the service.
