‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 Is Proof Matt & Karen Shouldn’t Be Together

What To Know

  • Daredevil: Born Again‘s second season has introduced a major romance for Matt and Karen, but we’re breaking down why they don’t belong together.
  • Matt and Karen’s Season 2 romance only proves they’re with the wrong people.

Daredevil: Born Again is back and making things official between Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), but the true tragedy isn’t their forced hiding amid Mayor Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) crackdown on vigilantes; it’s the fact that these two individuals are together when they belong with different people.

There are many strong opinions when it comes to Daredevil ships, and considering how Season 1 of the revival series concluded with a major Kastle easter egg, reminding viewers of the unresolved tension between Karen and Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), a.k.a The Punisher, it was slightly surprising to find that she’d gone all in on rekindling things with Matt Murdock.

While the original series, which kicked off on Netflix in 2015, may have teed up the Matt-Karen romance, it became clear quite quickly that Matt’s true match was Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung), and despite her apparent absence from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) so far, that reality hasn’t really changed.

Sure, on paper, we should be rooting for two do-gooders like Matt and Karen to be together, especially after the initial sparks with their first meeting. But the way Matt has dropped everything in the past to pursue and protect Elektra speaks louder than any declarations between him and Karen. Their dynamic may be toxic at times, but it’s Hot with a capital “H.” Who could forget that wrestling ring flashback or them sneaking into galas?

Sure, Matt and Karen have “fun,” but it isn’t the kind of fun that Matt and Elektra are having, and the same can be said for Karen when it comes to the person she belongs with. Ever since Frank Castle made his grand entrance to the universe in Daredevil‘s second season, there’s always been an underlying tension between them.

There is an innate understanding between Karen and Frank when it comes to justice, and while she may not condone all of his actions, she doesn’t look at him any differently because of them, and vice versa. Even showrunner Dario Scardapane acknowledged the duo‘s “cosmic connection” when we spoke to him about Kastle for Born Again Season 1. There’s a softness each of them has for the other that can’t be replicated with anyone else.

Ultimately, Matt and Karen’s current entanglement may be canon, but like anything in the MCU, it only takes one small thing to change the tide, and perhaps their relationship statuses. While we know Frank is out there somewhere, set to return in The Punisher special, One Last Kill, as well as the forthcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Elektra’s potential return is less certain.

Recent social media posts from Yung have fans buzzing over her potential return in Born Again‘s third season, which is currently in production, but no official announcements have been made at this time. Elektra was last seen in The Defenders in 2017.

After taking over as the leader of The Hand, Elektra was buried beneath the rubble of a collapsed building alongside Matt and hasn’t been seen since. What better time than now for her to make a comeback and shake things up between Matt and Karen… again.

For now, we can only hope, and similarly, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a Kastle reunion sooner than later. Let us know where you stand on the divisive argument in the comments section below, and stay tuned to see where the story will take them as Daredevil: Born Again unfolds on Disney+.
