What To Know

  • Every Year After adapts Carley Fortune’s novel, Every Summer After.
  • The series follows Percy and Sam’s evolving relationship from childhood to the present day.
  • Readers are eager to see key moments for the book come to life.

It’s only a little over a month until Every Year After hits our screens, and we’ll finally get to see Percy and Sam’s love story on our screens!

Every Year After, which adapts Carley Fortune’s beloved novel Every Summer After, follows Persephone “Percy” Fraser (Sadie Soverall) and Sam Florek (Matt Cornett) over the course of a six-year friendship turned romance. Weaving between the summers during their childhood and one weekend in the present day, the love story begs the question, “What if your first love was destined to be your soulmate?”

For fans of Carley Fortune’s novel, it is a massive deal that this book is coming to TV, so we’re not so patiently counting down the minutes. In the meantime, we’ve collected the six scenes we most desperately need to see make their way into the adaptation. Scroll to find out our picks. (Warning: Major book spoilers ahead!)

Percy swims across the lake

Starting pretty tame, we’ve got Percy’s big swim across the lake. During the summers in the past, we really see Percy’s coming-of-age story, and this is a major milestone along the way. Plus, watching the swim and seeing the distance would really put into perspective just how challenging Percy’s goal is.

Three updates

While we’re not married to a line-for-line adaptation of Every Summer After, there is one ongoing piece of dialogue we hope they do keep in: Percy and Sam’s three updates. Starting when they were young, the duo would give each other three major updates from the last however many months since they last spoke. Once he’s in college, Sam uses his three updates to try to propose to Percy. Whether it’s this season or somewhere down the line, we’re eager to see that scene come to life. And probably cry knowing what comes next.

Percy sleeps over at Sam’s

After watching The Blair Witch Project while home alone in her cabin, Percy tells Sam she doesn’t want to sleep alone and ends up sharing his bed for the night. After years of built-up will-they/won’t-they tension, the two kiss for the first time. As one of the best scenes in the book, we’re selfishly hoping it finds itself on the screen exactly how it’s written, if not even better.

Percy & Sam study anatomy

Who knew anatomy could be so sexy? As an aspiring doctor, Sam studies an anatomy textbook… and then Percy as a life-sized model. Enough said.

Michael Bradway as Charlie in Every Year After

Charlie & Percy hook up

Maybe we just like hurting our own feelings, but we’re eager to see this messy moment between Percy and Charlie (Michael Bradway) hit the screen. After all, it brings a whole new meaning to the whole “wrong brother” quote! So much of this scene relies on Percy’s internal monologue, we’re eager to see how the series can bring it to life.

A nod to One Golden Summer

Speaking of Charlie, please! We’re talking breadcrumbs, and we would be happy! Our vision: Charlie is driving the banana boat, and a camera flash can be seen in the background. During the next season — fingers crossed! — we’ll see the same scene from Alice’s perspective.
