We wouldn’t classify Hulu’s Alice and Steve as a romance, and neither does the show itself. Marketed as a “wrong com,” Hulu’s latest show revolves around 50-something, longtime best friends Alice (Nicola Walker) and Steve (Jemaine Clement). Their friendship is put to the test when Steve starts dating Alice’s 26-year-old daughter (Yali Topol Margalith). (Spoilers ahead!)
Despite Alice’s vocal reservations, Steve and Izzy are convinced that they’re meant for each other. Do Izzy and Steve end up together in Alice and Steve?
Once they hook up in Episode 1, Izzy and Steve quickly move past their reservations about being together. Alice attempts to drive them apart — she briefly succeeds in convincing Steve to break up with Izzy — but when he discovers that Alice is responsible for ruining his career, Steve gets Izzy back.
Steve and Izzy’s relationship continues to move at a breakneck pace from there, particularly because Izzy finds out that she’s pregnant. The father is actually her ex, Yannis, but Steve wants to be there for Izzy anyway. They decide to get married, much to Alice’s dismay. During a pre-wedding shooting activity, Alice even points a gun at Steve, but denies it when Steve confronts her in front of Izzy. Izzy believes her mother and wonders whether she can really trust Steve, which leads to doubts about their relationship.
The night gets even more complicated when Izzy texts Yannis about her nuptials, and he shows up at the venue. After pulling her away for a private conversation, Yannis claims that Izzy wants him to stop the wedding. She denies it, but it becomes clear that Izzy still has some lingering feelings for Yannis when she kisses him.
In the end, though, Izzy doesn’t officially break things off with Steve. The show doesn’t have a neatly tied-up ending. When their lodging catches on fire, Alice runs back into the building to save Steve, who’s blasting music through his headphones and completely oblivious to the blaze.
Trapped inside, Steve and Alice make their way to the roof and finally have a heart-to-heart, recognizing each of their wrongdoings. “I really do love Izzy, but maybe I have no business being married,” Steve admits. “Half of me just thought you would stop it.”
With no other options, Alice and Steve leap off the roof. The episode ends on a shot of them mid-jump, leaving the friends’ fate on a cliffhanger. Alice and Steve is technically a limited series, so unless the show changes course and decides to move forward with a second season, viewers won’t find out if Steve and Izzy actually stay together.
