Who was Love Island USA‘s James Barker?
Barker, who was 40 years old when he died, began his production career at Leftfield Pictures in 2011, working on shows like Forged in Fire and Pawn Stars. He also worked under ITV America at the same time, where he produced the first two seasons of Netflix’s Queer Eye.
He worked as a story producer on Love Island USA Season 2 in 2020, according to his LinkedIn, before moving up the ranks as an executive producer in Season 5. He became a full-time executive producer in January 2026 ahead of Season 8.
“We come to Fiji for magic. We come to @loveislandusa to laugh, to cry, to care. Our islanders feel like the best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful… because here… they are,” Barker captioned a June 3 Instagram post. “Hope you’re all enjoying the new season brought to you by a huge squad of brilliant people, including the three models standing beside me.”
Barker also worked as a DJ and songwriter, according to his Instagram bio. Under the stage name DJ Chaotic, he regularly performed at Brooklyn bar C’mon Everybody, hosting the “Poppers: a Pop Party” event since August 2021.
Who is Adam Roth?
Barker is survived by his partner, Adam Roth. The couple’s “shared love of music was at the center of the life they built together — both at home and experiencing music all over the world,” ITV America and Peacock said in a statement.

Barker and Roth had bought a Brooklyn apartment together earlier this year. “Did we just buy a condo? Apartment? Whatever it is, it feels like home,” Barker wrote on Instagram in January. “We moved in almost two years ago and when presented with the opportunity to purchase we couldn’t think of anywhere else we wanted to live.”
“James was the absolute light and love of my life,” Roth, 48, told People. “He brought joy and brilliance to everything he touched.”
Roth is the CEO and founder of Silent Partner Advisory, which supports cultural organizations through strategy, business development and corporate sponsorships. He’d been in a relationship with Barker for over four years after meeting at a Billie Eilish concert. “James was such a champion of the community of young music artists he was able to introduce to audiences on Love Island,” Roth said.
Their time was “cut way too short, of course, but we took such advantage of the time we had together,” he continued. “I am so proud of the work he did and that he was surrounded by such an amazing team. His loss is unimaginable.”
