Love and Other Words movie

Favorite word? Adaptation. Macy and Elliot, it’s time to get out of the closet and onto the big screen! Christina Lauren’s beloved bestselling novel, Love and Other Words, which has reached iconic status in the BookTok world, is finally getting the adaptation treatment.

The novel, originally published in 2018, follows the friends-to-lovers, second-chance romance between Macy Sorensen and Elliot Petropoulos. A Love and Other Words movie is officially in the works, and because those of us here at Swooon are obsessed with this novel, we’ve gathered up all the key information you need to know about the adaptation.

What is Love and Other Words about?

The book, told in alternating timelines, chronicles the love story between Macy and Elliot, who fall in love as teenagers when Macy and her father spend their summers in the house next door to Elliot’s family home. They bond over books and their favorite words, with their feelings for each other growing stronger with each passing year.

However, one night changes everything for them, and they become strangers for over a decade. When Elliot and Macy run into each other years later, Macy is a new pediatrics resident and engaged to a new man. As they spend more time together, their undeniable connection resurfaces. But Elliot and Macy must confront their past and get clarity on what really happened on that night all those years ago before they can even think about the future.

When is Love and Other Words coming out?

Love and Other Words doesn’t have a release date yet, and it’s still early in the development stage, per The Hollywood Reporter. The earliest we could possibly see the movie adaptation would be late 2027. It’s also unclear whether this would be a theatrical or streaming release.

“We’ve been waiting a long time to share this one… LOVE AND OTHER WORDS is officially headed to the screen!!” Christina Lauren, the pen name for Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, wrote on Instagram after the announcement. “Since 2011 when we first began writing this story, Love and Other Words has always been so incredibly special to us. Macy and Elliot found their way into our hearts years ago, and the thought of seeing their love story come to life on screen is incredible!!”

The authors added, “We’re beyond thrilled to be partnering with the amazing team at Magic Hour, and we cannot wait to see where this journey leads! To every reader who has laughed, cried, highlighted favorite passages, handed this book to a friend, or simply believed in these characters alongside us—thank you. None of this happens without you! We’ll be sharing updates as we can! For now, trust the team—they are AWESOME!”

Magic Hour Entertainment, the production company created by Max Siemers and Tanner Anderson, will adapt the book. Siemers notably produced the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy.

“Romance is at its best when it captures something honest about the ways we experience love. Love and Other Words embodies everything we hope to find when bringing a story to the screen — it’s emotionally rich, beautifully written, and authentic to the experience of first love and loss,” Siemers said in a statement. “Christina and Lauren have crafted a romance that is both deeply personal and universally resonant and we’re excited to honor what readers have cherished about this story for years.”

Anderson added, “Max and I are drawn to stories that explore modern relationships through complex, imperfect characters whose experiences feel truthful and deeply relatable. Every film we make is built around a fundamental question about dating or love—the kinds of questions audiences are asking in their own lives today.”

Who is in the Love and Other Words cast?

Since the Love and Other Words movie adaptation is still in its early days, casting has not been announced. The search for Macy and Elliot is on! (Rest easy, Swooon is already thinking about a dream cast. Stay tuned.)

Is there a Love and Other Words sequel?

Not technically, and the authors told Swooon they didn’t plan to ever write an official sequel. “Not for Elliot and Macy, no,” they said. “Their story ends happily, exactly how it should. A sequel would introduce conflict, and these two have been through quite a lot already. They deserve smooth sailing from here on out.”

However, Christina Lauren fans know there are bonus chapters written in Elliot’s POV that offer a glimpse into his mind after he sees Macy again in the present day. The Elliot chapters can be read in the Love and Other Words Deluxe Edition.
