Hughes and Welker met in 2014 when a mutual friend set them up. They went on their first date in Philly.
When it came time for the second date, Welker arrived two hours late after getting stuck covering breaking news at work. Instead of getting upset about the timing, Hughes gave Welker a handmade gift of presidential trivia in the form of a crossword puzzle.
“That’s the moment he got me,” she admitted in an interview with The New York Times. “As a White House correspondent, it was so touching, and it marked him different than anyone else I ever dated.”
Just months into the romance, the pair was put to the test when Welker began traveling on the 2016 presidential campaign trail for work. But Hughes was committed to making things work by traveling to see her as often as he could. In June 2016, he proposed in Washington, D.C. when they had a rare 24 hours to spend together.

Welker and Hughes are parents to two children, both born via surrogate. They welcomed daughter Margot in 2021, followed by son Zachary in May 2024.

Their decision to use a surrogate came after a years-long fertility journey for the couple. Welker previously said on Today that she and Hughes began trying to conceive immediately after their 2017 wedding. When things didn’t happen naturally, they turned to in-vitro fertilization (IVF), but Welker learned that the lining of her uterus was too thin to carry a child herself.
Although she initially thought there would be a way to fix this issue, Welker ultimately had to come to terms with the fact that she could not carry her own child. “It was probably the lowest moment and realization that I’ve ever had,” she admitted.
In 2019, she and Hughes matched with a surrogate. The first transfer was unsuccessful, but in 2020, there was a successful pregnancy, leading to Margot’s birth in 2021.
