What To Know

  • Director Veronica Rodriguez explained that Mitchie and Shane’s breakup in Camp Rock 3 was a mutual decision supported by Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas.
  • The film emphasizes that despite their split, Mitchie and Shane remain close friends.
  • Rodriguez noted that the challenges of maintaining a relationship as touring musicians contributed to their breakup.

Mitchie Torres used to be Shane Gray’s “Favorite Song.” Now, they’re reuniting as “old friends.” So, what happened between Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam and Camp Rock 3? Director Veronica Rodriguez sat down with Swooon to take a deep dive into their off-camera split.

Eighteen years after Disney Channel released Camp Rock, Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas have returned as their beloved DCOM characters. While the two were still going strong when we last saw them in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, a lot has changed since their Camp Rock days. When Connect 3 returns to Camp Rock to find a new opening act in Camp Rock 3, they cross paths with Mitchie during Final Jam, making it clear that they haven’t seen her in quite some time.

As executive producers of the film, Lovato and the Jonas Brothers approved the characters’ split. “They read the scripts,” Rodriguez explained. “They gave their thoughts on how their characters were portrayed, and so everyone felt like — they grew up, they did their careers, and they’re still incredibly close.” She added, “But sometimes things just don’t end up the way that you thought when you were younger.”

According to Rodriguez, “It was really important to showcase that they’re still friends.” Or, as Nate (Nick Jonas) puts it during Final Jam, old friends. As she put it, “Summer camp is a beautiful experience. It’s like lightning in a bottle sometimes, but you know, not all life is summer camp.”

When asked if the Jonas Brothers or Lovato gave their two cents on the reason behind Mitchie and Shane’s breakup, she said, “We actually didn’t get into the weeds in that way.” However, she revealed, “As a fan myself, obviously I was thinking about that all the time. I’m like, ‘What was it?'”

Here’s the hypothesis she worked under: “They definitely tried it out. [But now] they are both huge stars in the world. Connect 3 is going on another huge reconnection tour, and Mitchie, when she comes, she’s like, ‘I had a day off of tour,’ so she’s off touring. It is hard having a relationship and being a touring musician — that’s a fact. They had so much love for each other. But as touring musicians, it’s hard to have a relationship.”

That said, she explained, “The special thing is that every time you return back to summer camp, you still have those same feelings. You still have that excitement, and that love for each other, and the friendship, and that lightning in a bottle feeling. I love things feeling real and grounded, and things can feel magical while still representing reality. Not all of reality is a fairy tale, but it can still be magical.”

Could Shane and Mitchie reunite in the future? We’ll just have to wait until a potential Camp Rock 4 to find out!
