Oh, Lorelai. One half of the iconic mother-daughter duo at the heart of Gilmore Girls, and the kind of friend who makes you roll your eyes one minute and laugh harder than anyone the next. The only thing more questionable than her parenting choices, however, might be her love life.
Despite being one of Stars Hollow’s most eligible residents, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) doesn’t actually have that many love interests throughout the seven seasons of Gilmore Girls. Instead, she tends to fall into longer, more serious relationships; perhaps there was simply a very small dating pool in Stars Hollow. And, of course, this was before Tinder.
Still, several of Lorelai’s boyfriends, fiancés, and husbands stand out for better or, more often, worse. Jason Stiles
Jason (Chris Eigeman), better known as Digger, was one of Lorelai’s central love interests in Season 4, and let’s just say he’s probably not the boyfriend most Gilmore Girls fans are desperate to revisit. In many ways, Jason is an exaggerated male version of Lorelai. They share the same dry sense of humor and slightly offbeat personalities, with Lorelai even describing him to Rory (Alexis Bledel) as “off center.” He’s weird, she’s weird, and for a while, it somehow works.

But Jason also has plenty of quirks that make him a difficult boyfriend. For one thing, he’s a notoriously light sleeper, which leads to Lorelai staying in his guest room rather than sharing his bed. Seems a bit like the Scandinavian sleep method, long before anyone was making TikToks about it. The guest room is also packed with his “distractions” — aka his books and movies — which feels weird.
Then there’s the small matter of suing Lorelai’s dad. Jason’s business dispute with Richard (Edward Herrmann) ultimately leads to a lawsuit that creates a huge rift between the families. And genuinely, imagine finding out your boyfriend is suing your dad. Talk about an awkward family dinner.
It doesn’t help that Jason was Lorelai’s last serious boyfriend before she finally got together with Luke. The man was competing with Luke Danes (Scott Patterson). The odds were never exactly in his favor.
How did Jason and Lorelai meet?
They first met at summer camp as kids, but crossed paths again years later when Jason became business partners with Lorelai’s dad, Richard.
It was hardly a case of childhood sweethearts. In fact, while canoeing, Jason apparently stood up and tipped Lorelai into the water in an attempt to make her shirt see-through. Not exactly the stuff of a great romance.
They meet again as adults in 2003, and Jason is immediately crass about Lorelai’s looks. Clearly infatuated, he pursues her for a date. Lorelai is hesitant, given that he comes from the wealthy world she’s spent years trying to leave behind, but eventually agrees on one condition: They keep their relationship secret from her parents.

He reenters her life in Season 4 and sticks around for most of the season.
Why did Jason and Lorelai break up?
Jason initially teams up with Richard in an attempt to take down his father’s company. However, their partnership quickly falls apart after Jason’s father, Floyd Stiles (Lawrence Pressman), threatens to destroy Richard’s business.
Richard retaliates by making a deal with Floyd that leaves Jason out in the cold. In response, Jason sues Richard, putting Lorelai in an impossible position. Ultimately, she chooses her family and breaks up with Jason.
What happened to Jason?
The last time we see Jason is at the Dragonfly Inn, where he attempts to reconcile with Lorelai. Unfortunately for him, she’s already moving on to greener pastures — *cough* Luke! And so, we bid adieu to this odd little man.
Christopher Hayden
Rory’s dad, Christopher (David Sutcliffe), was obviously always going to make this list of Lorelai’s boyfriends. The pair had their good times when they were younger, but their relationship only seemed to go downhill from there. He pushed Lorelai into marriage, tried to sabotage her relationship with Luke, and repeatedly put his own wants ahead of hers. We hate.

Despite all their ups and downs, Christopher always seemed to view Lorelai as the one who got away, and, unfortunately, she clearly had a weakness for him, too.
How did Christopher and Lorelai meet?
They met when they were six years old and quickly became best friends, eventually beginning to date as teenagers. Christopher came from a wealthy, respectable family, which earned him the approval of Lorelai’s parents, even after Lorelai became pregnant at 16.
However, Christopher wasn’t ready to step up and become the father Lorelai needed him to be.
When did Christopher and Lorelai get together?
There are a few different chapters to Lorelai and Christopher’s relationship. First, there was their teenage romance. Then, they nearly rekindled things at the end of Season 2, when Christopher accompanied Lorelai to Sookie’s (Melissa McCarthy) wedding. However, his ex, Sherry (Mädchen Amick), calls to tell him she’s pregnant, and he leaves Lorelai to be with her. Oh, and makes Lorelai break the news to Rory about her new sibling, ugh.
After a period of minimal contact, Lorelai comes to Christopher’s aid when Sherry leaves him and their daughter, Gigi, to take a job in Paris. The two eventually rekindle their relationship for real following the end of Lorelai’s engagement to Luke.
Why did Christopher and Lorelai break up?
Christopher convinces Lorelai to marry him in Paris in Season 7, but his jealousy over Luke continues to cause problems in their relationship, and, given their history, perhaps for good reason.
Eventually, Lorelai can no longer deny her feelings for Luke or the fact that Christopher isn’t “the one” for her. The pair decide to end their marriage and go their separate ways.

They part on good terms, and Christopher is seen proudly watching his daughter graduate from Yale.
Alex Lesman
Okay, this was a brief dalliance for Lorelai, but one that still deserves a spot in this Gilmore Girls romance guide. And it would be a disservice not to mention that this is Charlie Swan from Twilight!?

Alex (Billy Burke) was Lorelai’s boyfriend for part of Season 3. They went on a coffee date and a fishing trip… and that’s basically it. Things eventually fizzled out, and Alex disappeared without another word. Maybe there were some scheduling conflicts with the vampire universe.
Still, it was good while it lasted, and we loved their coffee-tasting adventure. Alex was also a fellow single parent, giving him a little more in common with Lorelai than some of her other love interests.
So, let’s talk about Lorelai’s second boyfriend in Gilmore Girls.
How did Alex and Lorelai meet?
Lorelai meets Alex at a seminar where Sookie reunites with a former friend. They hit it off and go on a casual first date, sampling different coffees for Alex’s up-and-coming coffee shop.

It all started and ended in Season 3.
Why did Alex and Lorelai break up?
The last time we see Alex is in Season 3’s Episode 14, when he gets four tickets to see the musical Levittown in New York. He invites Lorelai, Sookie, and Jackson (Jackson Douglas) along, and although the musical itself is a bust, the four of them still manage to have a good time.
Throughout the episode, Alex is shown to be kind and considerate, particularly when it comes to Lorelai and all her eccentricities. Unfortunately, this is the last we see of him. His relationship with Lorelai simply seems to fizzle out, with Lorelai later confiding in Sookie that her feelings for Alex had grown cold.
And just like that, Alex disappears from Stars Hollow without so much as a goodbye.

No one knows. Guess he went off to be a cop in Forks.
Max Medina
Max (Scott Cohen) is Lorelai’s first boyfriend — and fiancé — of the series, and one of her most serious relationships. Max was a classic case of the right guy at the wrong time. He had plenty of love to give and wasn’t afraid of a grand romantic gesture, like proposing to Lorelai surrounded by around 1,000 daisies. Romantic? Absolutely. The fact that he did it in the middle of an argument? Questionable timing, to say the least.

He also genuinely seemed to care about Rory and wanted to be part of her life. However, Max’s teacher energy didn’t always stay in the classroom. He could be surprisingly patronizing towards Lorelai, which made some of their interactions feel more like a teacher lecturing a student than two adults in a relationship.
How did Max and Lorelai meet?
Well, in a tale as old as time, the single mom shacks up with her daughter’s teacher. Yep, it’s attraction at first sight, but the forbidden nature of things keeps them apart for about…two minutes.
When did Max and Lorelai get together?
They begin dating in Season 1, when Max asks Lorelai out at the Stars Hollow bake sale. The pair initially keeps their relationship secret, with Lorelai eventually ending things when she realizes just how much she and Rory have come to enjoy having Max in their lives.
Max is understandably hurt, but things become even more complicated when the headmaster threatens to fire him for having a relationship with a Chilton parent. Max decides they shouldn’t be together, at least for the time being.
Several months later, Lorelai turns up unexpectedly at his apartment late one night. They rekindle their relationship, setting the stage for an even more serious chapter of their romance.
Why did Max and Lorelai break up?
Things get serious quickly over that first season, and Max actually proposes twice. The first is romantically underwhelming, while the second is essentially him following a woman’s exact orders, duh. The engagement progresses all the way to the bachelorette party, just one week before the wedding, when Lorelai realizes that Max isn’t “the one” and she can’t go through with marrying him.
What happened to Max?
They share a kiss and finally acknowledge their feelings for one another. However, Max wants to move on and tells Lorelai that he never wants to see her again.
Unfortunately, that’s a little difficult when he’s Rory’s literal teacher. Max and Lorelai have to awkwardly navigate seeing each other at school, with their personal history making things particularly uncomfortable.
Max later moves to California to teach at Stanford and begins a relationship with someone new. He eventually returns to Hartford for Chilton’s bicentennial celebrations, where he runs into Lorelai several times. Although he tells her he’s at peace with how their relationship ended, he kisses her and admits that he’s not actually over her.
His final appearance comes when he serves on the parents’ committee for Chilton’s graduation party alongside Lorelai. She appears interested in rekindling their relationship, but Max insists that she stay away from him.
Luke Danes
We saved the very best for last: Luke Danes, aka the man of our dreams. Luke is easily the best boyfriend Lorelai had throughout Gilmore Girls. In fact, we’d argue he was the best boyfriend in the entire show. And even “boyfriend” feels like an undersell, as Luke was a man-friend, and a very sexy one at that.

There are so many picture-perfect moments between them: Lorelai serenading him at karaoke, Luke building her a literal ice rink, and, of course, the fact that he waited EIGHT WHOLE YEARS for her. Odysseus could never.
Even before they got together, Luke consistently went above and beyond for Lorelai. He shut down the diner when her dad had a heart attack, brought ice to her daughter’s birthday party, and was always there whenever Lorelai needed him.
After all those years of will-they-won’t-they, Luke finally became the man Lorelai had been looking for all along, and honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better ending.
How did Luke and Lorelai meet?
It’s a real friends-to-lovers situation!
Luke and Lorelai meet after she’s been living in Stars Hollow for a few years. Their first meeting at Luke’s diner is revealed in Episode 3 of Season 5, “Written in the Stars,” when Lorelai walks in one day, checks the horoscope page of a newspaper and, under “Scorpio,” writes: “You’ll meet an annoying woman today. Give her coffee, and she’ll go away.”
They quickly become close friends, bonding over their shared sarcasm, endless coffee, and life in Stars Hollow. But beneath all the bickering and banter, they both harbor stronger feelings for each other, feelings that take years to finally come to the surface.
When did Luke and Lorelai get together?
Everyone knew these two were meant for each other, but they were being so damn difficult about it. Finally, in Season 4, Luke takes Lorelai as his date to his sister’s wedding, but it isn’t until the opening night of the Dragonfly Inn that he finally kisses her.
Luke then takes Lorelai on their first official date, where he reveals that he’s kept the horoscope she gave him on the very first day they met, in his wallet, all these years later. If that isn’t a sign that these two were always meant to be, we don’t know what is. (Brb sobbing).
Why did Luke and Lorelai break up?
Luke and Lorelai eventually get engaged, but their relationship begins to unravel following the reemergence of Luke’s daughter, April (Vanessa Marano). Luke becomes increasingly distant as he struggles to balance his relationship with Lorelai and his new role as a father.
Eventually, Lorelai gives him an ultimatum: Marry her now or end the relationship. Luke panics under the pressure, and Lorelai walks away.
They get back together right at the end of Season 7, which means we’re starved for more time with them. The series ends with a kiss between Lorelai and Luke, after he worked all night to throw a goodbye party for Rory.
