Practical Magic 2 will be all about Sally’s relationship with her daughters, and Sandra Bullock is all about family, too.

Bullock shared a rare photo of her real-life children on social media several weeks before the sequel film hits theaters. The 62-year-old took to Instagram to share some summer photos of her son and daughter.

They lead a mostly private life compared to their mom, though Bullock has shared various anecdotes about the now-teenagers over the years. Keep reading for everything we know about Louis and Laila Bullock, as well as their mom’s comments about parenting.

Is Sandra Bullock married?

Bullock married TV host Jesse James in 2005, and they divorced in 2010 due to his infidelity. They had spent years waiting to adopt Louis, per a 2011 interview James did with ABC. After their split, James had no contact with Bullock or Louis, whom Bullock eventually adopted as a single parent.

“I don’t want to try to second-guess what she thinks or something like that,” James said. “I mean, I know why I moved [to Austin, where Bullock lived]… I moved initially so the kids could keep a relationship and I could kind of keep a relationship with Louis, and then whatever else happened besides that. But I mostly moved to, for me. To get out of California.”

“You know, the painful stuff, like with Louis,” James, who had kids from a previous relationship, continued. “I could only cry so much about him until I have to, like, suck it up and keep a stiff upper lip, and realize, hey, I have three kids that I do have.”

Bullock began dating photographer Bryan Randall in 2015. He died in August 2023. He had privately fought ALS for three years, which was shared upon his death.

In 2021, Bullock spoke about coparenting with Randall, who wasn’t part of her decision to adopt Laila, who came along shortly after their relationship began.

“I had Louis first. And then when I met him — and we hadn’t been together that long — I go, ‘Do you remember that NDA you signed when you photographed my son?’ … He was still scared, his whole life had been unraveled because of me,” the actress said on Red Table Talk. “And I said, ‘You know that still holds.’ And he said, ‘Okay, why?’ And I was like, ‘Because I’m bringing a child home when I come back from Toronto.’ He was like, ‘Sorry what?'”

Does Sandra Bullock have kids?

In her late 40s, Bullock welcomed two kids via adoption. “I don’t know why that was the only route, but I’m so glad the universe had me wait, ” she said on Red Table Talk in December 2021. “Had me wait even though I was anxious and I was eager — and it went nope, you’re not going to do it the way you think you’re going to do it.”

During a 2018 interview with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb, Bullock opened up about her priorities in her life. “It’s my kids,” she said. “Everything is about them being OK, being in school, having what they need, their moments. I need to be there for every single moment that they have. It’s harder for me to leave them than I think it is for them when I leave. I don’t leave that much, and I don’t work that much anymore either. … So my priorities are my kids, my kids, my kids. My family. My family. That’s it.”

In 2022, Bullock said she’d taken a step back from acting to be a parent to her kids. “I’m not retiring, just going to not spend time in front of the camera for a while. I have beautiful babies. I’d rather look at them,” Sandra told People. “I’d rather look at them every day and have them be mad at me and annoyed and make memories with them for right now.”

Since then, she’s only occasionally shared photos of her kids on Instagram, including a Mother’s Day post earlier this year.

Louis Bullock

Bullock adopted Louis in January 2010 when he was a little over three months old. He was born in Louisiana. “Katrina happened in New Orleans, and I knew — just something told me that my child was there. It was weird,” she said during a Today appearance.

“With Lou being a young Black man, at one point, sweet, funny Lou is gonna be a young man,” Bullock told InStyle in 2018. “And the minute he leaves my home, I can’t follow him everywhere, though I will try… I pray and pray and pray that I have done a good enough job.”

Bullock described her son as “super sensitive, at the time. “He’s wise and kind. I saw that when they handed him to me,” she added. “There was a spiritual bigness to him. I was like, ‘I hope I don’t eff that up.’ ”

Bullock said Louis, now 16, is a foodie. “He started off as a mixologist, was very into mixing drinks,” she said on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2022. “Had a cocktail book, no alcohol… Then he got into making boba… Then he wanted to deep fry everything. Everything was coated in sugar… everything is food-based for him.”

During a November 2021 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Bullock said her movies aren’t Louis’ “cup of tea,” but Spider-Man or Japanese anime are. “He has really good taste,” she said.

Laila Bullock

In 2015, Bullock adopted Laila when she was a little over two years old, and Louis “spearheaded the whole journey,” according to Bullock. Laila was in foster care in Louisiana.

Over the years, Bullock has shared anecdotes about Laila’s strong personality. In 2021, she told People that her then-8-year-old would eventually become the President of the United States. When she was promoting her film The Lost City on Live with Kelly and Ryan the next year, she said, “Everything is an extreme sport of danger for [Laila].”

She added, “My kids are so funny, so strange, so cool, a little too smart for what I’m comfortable for right now.”

Around the same time, the actress told People that her daughter and Channing Tatum‘s daughter got into disagreements at their preschool years before. “Our daughters got into a couple scraps at school because they’re both very, very, very strong-willed little girls,” Tatum added to Vanity Fair in 2023.

The actress loves who both of her kids are. On Red Table Talk, she said, “Every day I get to see who they are. I am one of the lucky individuals that gets to be around my children all the time and see who they get to grow up and be. And who they’re growing up to be, I couldn’t be more proud of.”
