‘Better Than the Movies’: 7 Scenes We Must See in Netflix’s Adaptation

Now that we have our Liz Buxbaum (Beatrice Kitsos) and our Wes Bennett (David Iacono), Netflix’s Better Than the Movies adaptation is one step closer to gracing our screens. This iconic enemies-to-friends-to-enemies-to-lovers has all of our favorite tropes, and we need to see them all.

After much thought, we have determined the seven most important (and iconic) scenes we need to see in the movie. (Spoilers ahead for Lynn Painter’s Better Than the Movies.)

‘She. Isn’t. You.’

Three words that altered everyone’s brain chemistry. Liz is spiraling after realizing she loves Wes, not Michael, but, of course, there is a miscommunication. Now thinking Wes isn’t in her because he went to prom with Alex, Liz confesses her feelings, not expecting him to feel the same way. She even doubles down and says she gets it that Alex is gorgeous and perfect, but then Wes says, “I suppose,” leaving Liz to wonder out loud about why Wes wouldn’t like Alex. He immediately shuts her spiraling down to confess, “She. Isn’t. You.”

The car crash

Car crash. In the rain. At night. What could be more disastrous yet perfect? Wes accidentally crashes his car into a tree, and the next thing you know, Liz is in his lap, and they are having their first kiss at 12:13 a.m. After building crazy tension all night, this kiss in the car, in the rain, is chef’s kiss. Until, of course, Wes’s dad sees them…

Movie night at Michael’s

The tension in Michael’s basement could have been cut with a knife. When Wes and Liz are there for a movie night sitting right next to each other and stealing glances, Liz has a realization that she doesn’t like Michael in the way she likes Wes, or as she puts it, she would run through a train station for Wes but not Michael. This is Liz’s total lightbulb moment that changes everything between them.

Liz’s wardrobe malfunction at the party

Liz just has the worst luck, especially when it comes to trying to impress people. She gets all dressed up for a party that Michael is at, only for him to say her dress reminds him of a work uniform, and then Ashley throws up on it. Horrifying. Naturally, the only solution is for Wes to give her his spare clothes that he just happens to have in the back of his car. Now Liz is in his shirt and sweatpants, which she is swimming in. Her new outfit is short-lived as the pants are practically falling down, revealing her small tattoo on her hip. When Michael sees the tattoo, Wes’s jealousy comes out, leaving him to decide it’s time for them to go because “Liz’s clothes are falling off.” Wes Bennett’s banter reigns supreme.

Finding out Wes has had a parking spot this whole time

The whole premise of Wes and Liz’s ongoing rivalry with each other stems from the fight over “the spot.” Since there is only one spot for them to park their car in front of their houses, they spend every day fighting each other over who gets the spot and race to see who gets there first. Come to find out, Wes has always had a spot in his literal driveway, but has never used it because he wanted the chance to talk to Liz, even if they were fighting.

Liz learns Wes used to listen to her practice piano

Thank you, Liz’s stepmom, Helena (the OG Wes supporter), for telling her that Wes used to sit on the back porch and listen to Liz practice piano, even when she was a horrible player. We don’t care if it’s a flashback or just a mention, but we need yearning Wes on our screens.

When Liz gets hit in the face with a basketball

While at the basketball game with the boys and trying to impress Michael, Liz is hit square in the nose with a basketball, leaving her spewing blood. Wes’s first instinct? Obviously, to take off his shirt and press it against Liz’s nose to stop the bleeding. Meanwhile, Michael sits there laughing at her. Wes Bennett, the man you are.
