Are HGTV’s Carter Oosterhouse & Amy Smart Still Married?
HGTV is bringing some beloved stars from the 1990s together to compete on the new series Totally ’90s House, premiering on August 26. On the show, they’ll be mentored by familiar HGTV faces Carter Oosterhouse and Sabrina Soto.
In 2011, Oosterhouse married actress Amy Smart, who got her start in the 90s as well. Oosterhouse is best known for being a carpenter on Trading Spaces, but has also hosted Carter Can (2007 to 2010), Red, Hot & Green (2008), and Million Dollar Rooms (2012) on HGTV.

Yes, Oosterhouse and Smart are still together, going on 15 years of marriage. They often post updates about their lives together on social media, including a 50th birthday tribute to Smart from Oosterhouse in March.
“HUGE HAPPY BIRTHDAY to this beauty!” he wrote. “You are a blessing to our little family and anyone who’s lucky enough to meet u.. keep rockin that Amy-style…it’s perfect!!!”
How did Carter Oosterhouse and Amy Smart meet?
Oosterhouse and Smart met through their environmental work. They bonded over their connection to Michigan, as he was born in Traverse City, and she spent summers there visiting her grandparents ever since she was a child.
“We met through the Environmental Media Association,” Smart said on the At Home With Drew & Linda podcast. “We were assigned to adopt a school garden together to mentor. We were just friendly acquaintances.”
They made the Traverse City connection during their first meeting and Smart told her now-husband, “Next time I’m up there, maybe I’ll try to get a hold of you.”

She said that she did call Oosterhouse when she was in town about a little over a year later and invited him to have dinner with her and her parents. “It felt very friendly and PG,” Oosterhouse admitted. “We’re both on the board of the EMA. Why wouldn’t I go to dinner with her and her parents? No, seriously. I was like, ‘OK.’ Because I didn’t really think anything of it at the time.”
After two more outings with Smart’s parents in Michigan, Oosterhouse thought he was being friend-zoned. Smart, meanwhile, was “newly out of my long ass relationship” and was looking to have some fun, but didn’t want to ditch her parents while she was visiting them.
Finally, the Oosterhouse asked Smart to go on a solo outing on his boat. They had an “awful” first kiss at the end of the date, then didn’t talk for several months until Smart invited him to a Labor Day party at her house. “We did end up kissing one more time, and it was really good,” she dished. From there, they started dating, then got engaged just seven months later before tying the knot in September 2011.
Where do Carter Oosterhouse and Amy Smart live?
Oosterhouse and Smart have homes in California and, of course, Traverse City. They spend summers at their 100-year-old farmhouse in Michigan, which Oosterhouse helped transform after he bought it before his wedding to Smart.
Do Carter Oosterhouse and Amy Smart have kids?
Yes, the couple shares a daughter named Flora, who was born via surrogate in December 2016. Smart dealt with fertility issues before Flora’s birth.
