In the final moments of The Last Sunrise, Ry’s (Maia Reficco) inner monologue reveals that her first summer in Spain ended up being the beginning of her life. It’s not totally clear how much she remembers about her romance with Julián (Fernando Lindez), but she smiles at him just before he reintroduces himself. It’s a fairly open ending, so the setup would certainly work for a sequel.
Prime Video’s latest rom-dram is based on book by After author Anna Todd, though Todd pitched it as a feature film before the book was written. The script was finished before the book, leading to some differences between the source material and the adaptation. The 2025 novel was marketed as a standalone, with an epilogue that wrapped up Ry and Julián’s journey. So, what does that mean for The Last Sunrise’s sequel potential?
Will there be a Last Sunrise sequel?
In June 2026 — months before the movie premiered — Deadline reported that Prime Video was “eyeing” a sequel to The Last Sunrise. The studio hadn’t outright confirmed that Ry and Julián’s story will continue in another movie. Todd was reportedly thinking of making the once-standalone book into a trilogy.
The Last Sunrise screenwriter Anna Klassen announced that she was working on the sequel script that same month. “Baby’s first franchise!” Klassen wrote on Instagram. “Beyond excited to be writing the sequel to THE LAST SUNRISE before the first film has even hit screens. So grateful to spend more time with these characters, the island of Mallorca, and this incredible team. And most of all, I’m happy to report that it is, in fact, not the last sunrise after all.”
What would The Last Sunrise sequel be about?
Director Carlson Young told Swooon that there are “a lot of places to go from the ending,” which was ambiguous. Ry seemingly lost a portion of her memories after needing emergency surgery, but they were coming back to her slowly.
“I have an idea. I think we have an idea,” she said. “So there’s a lot to mine in remembering. Remembering someone that is so completely primally natural to you, but that your brain doesn’t quite remember. I think having a like a chemistry, a romantic chemistry with someone where you’re almost like mirroring each other and like figuring out what once was is like a very… Hot, hot, hot.”
Ry appears to be staying in Spain, now that her mom has invested in Julián’s dad’s business. There’s also the matter of Julián going against Ry’s wishes to not get surgery. He encourages Ry’s mom to greenlight the procedure.
“Maia and I have talked about that. At the end of the shoot, we were like, ‘It wasn’t her choice.’ And she’s like, ‘It wasn’t my choice,'” Young said. “Spiritually, we have a problem with that, and we’ll be wrestling with that from here on out.”
