Avery Blackwell is a high school senior who, after mourning her free‑spirited mother, turns down Columbia University to spend a year at her mom’s alma mater in Brighton, England. On a train to campus, she meets Charlie, and they make a deal: Avery will pretend to be Charlie’s girlfriend to make her ex jealous, and Charlie will help Avery solve a scavenger hunt her mom left behind. As they follow clues around Brighton, Avery connects with her mother’s past, deals with her grief, and realizes what started as a fake relationship may be something much more real.
