[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers from Married at First Sight Season 19, Episodes 1-14.]
Married at First Sight‘s new era was full of highs and lows for the Season 19 couples, and now we know how they fared once the experiment ended. The now Peacock Original debuted with 10 singles from Austin, Texas, all taking a chance on love. After being paired by experts, the five couples married at first sight and began the eight-week experiment. The pairs went on their honeymoons and started living together as husband and wife. One couple even found out they were pregnant while filming. All of the developments in their marriage led up to Decision Day, when the newlyweds made the ultimate choice: stay married or split.
Season 19 wound up making history again by having all of the couples — Meghann and Derrek, Will and Brittany, Josh and Jalyn, Pat and Rhonda, and Belynda and Chad — choose to stay together. Meghann & Derrek
Status: Not Together
Meghann, 37, and Derrek, 38, said “I do” in Episode 2 of Season 19. Both had never been married before, but they stressed they were ready to settle down. Meghann admitted she’s much more introverted, while Derrek is a self-proclaimed extrovert. After getting married, Meghann and Derrek seemed to get off to a good start. Meghann pointed out that they have “funny banter,” and she enjoyed being with him.
In Episode 4, Derrek was looking to learn more about Meghann so they could deepen their connection. On their honeymoon, he was upfront about wanting to get to know her better and vice versa. Meghann started to get defensive and claimed she felt “ambushed” by the conversation.
The next few episodes found Meghann and Derrek living together and having an explosive argument about family planning. Meghann confirmed she was scared and excited by the prospect of having kids. Derrek, though he was on the same page about having a family, felt like the topic was difficult to bring up to his wife. “Last night really f**king hurt me,” Meghann told her husband. “That you feel like I don’t want children and then you decided to gaslight the s**t out of me.”
All seemed to have been resolved by the next episode when they had a heart-to-heart. Derrek met Meghann’s family afterward, and the topic of kids came up again. They also had a romantic date, and Meghann said “I love you,” but Derrek didn’t say it back immediately. It caused some tension until he returned the sentiment in Episode 9.
Around their one-month anniversary, they found out Meghann was pregnant, which Derrek said “changes everything for [them].” They chose to keep it a secret from their castmates during Episode 10’s couples retreat.
The next batch of episodes found them preparing for the next phase of their lives. Meghann and Derrek babysat their friends’ three kids to get a sense of what they were in for as parents. They also told Meghann’s parents that they were expecting and started setting up Meghann’s house for the baby. When they took a break, Derrek mentioned that they had more reason to stay together because of their situation.
“I love Derrek, but just because we’re pregnant doesn’t mean we have to be together. It’s not like I’m thinking about saying no, but the independent side of me is like, we do have a choice,” Meghann said in a confessional afterward.
At the reunion, Meghann explained that she had a miscarriage. “It was extremely hard, seeing what Meghann had to go through, what we had to go through,” Derrek said while Meghann teared up. “It was really, really terrible.” He added that they started to clash after that. After a really big fight, Derrek broke up with Meghann on the phone and moved out a week later. They hadn’t seen each other since then when they met for the reunion.
Will & Brittany
Status: Not Together
Will, 30, and Brittany, 29, were the second Season 19 couple to wed. Ahead of their wedding, they both expressed similar attributes they wanted in a future spouse. However, once they got on their honeymoon, Will and Brittany’s relationship started to spiral despite their physical chemistry.
After getting intimate the night before, Brittany opened up about how they may not have taken all the “necessary precautions,” and when she brought it up to Will, she said the mood shifted.
The vibe between Will and Brittany was off after that. They both aren’t getting what they need out of the other in regards to communication. As Brittany said, they’re not just on the same page, they’re not even in the same book. When Brittany walked away to get some air, Will didn’t feel the need to follow her.
Episode 5 saw a bit of lingering tension when Will refused to be intimate with his wife. He wanted to go slow after the earlier debacle. When they started living together in Episode 6, the couple decided to move on from their honeymoon. Things went a lot smoother from there on out, especially after they touched base with a MAFS expert to work through some of their hangups. Will had to leave briefly for a work trip, but no issues arose from it.
Will told the other guys he and Brittany were still “learning” each other in Episode 7. During her own meetup with the other women, Brittany said, “I think our feelings for one another are actually growing.”
In Episode 8, Brittany remained optimistic and said she had no doubts about her husband, but Will responded that things might change over time, which rubbed Brittany the wrong way. On their anniversary, Brittany said that she thought she’d feel different about her marriage at that point.
When the experts came to help the couple work through their issues, Brittany remained unsure of where her husband stood in regards to their relationship. She expressed similar feelings during the Episode 10 retreat, and though Brittany worried that she and Will had no emotional connection, they smoothed things over.
In next handful of episodes, Will said “I love you” to Brittany for the first time. Brittany also confirmed in a confessional that she saw a future with her husband and was totally confident in what her decision would be. Will, on the other hand, wasn’t on the same page. When the couple was spending time apart before Decision Day, Will called Brittany, telling her that he was going to end their relationship.
They tried to work it out on Decision Day and did choose stay together, but Will and Brittany ended things a little while later. In fact, Brittany said that she and Will hadn’t spoken for about a year and a half when they sat down at the reunion. After Will blocked her number, Brittany said she tried to fight for their marriage by dropping off a letter at his apartment, but Will didn’t read it.
Josh & Jalyn
Status: Not Together
Josh and Jalyn were the first couple of Season 19 to get married. Josh, 31, is a self-made man who owns his own roofing company. He only just established a relationship with his father, who recently found out about his son’s existence. Josh’s mother spent time in prison.
Jalyn, 27, is a realtor and cycle instructor. Her dad played professional baseball when she was growing up. Her parents were high school sweethearts, but Jalyn said they were “never in love.”
While Josh and Jalyn have their differences, with Josh being more adventurous than his wife, they remained united. Josh was by Jalyn’s side when her mother, Belynda, married Chad. After the wedding, Josh and Jalyn had sex for the first time. On their honeymoon, Josh surprised Jalyn with a massive wedding ring.
Up until Episode 8, Josh and Jalyn hadn’t had any major arguments between them, even after moving in together. In fact, Josh even told his wife that he no longer wanted her sign a postnup after he brought it up a few episodes ago. However, things changed when Jalyn discovered Josh lied about unfollowing his ex on social media. She was worried that the little lie might turn into something bigger.
When the experts came to help them resolve the issue in Episode 9, Jalyn and Josh had another disagreement. Jalyn brought up that she never wanted to go to the Burning Man festival with Josh, who had found a community there in the past. It led to the couple discussing other ways to find a community. Jalyn and Josh agreed to try to find a compromise and a way forward, but it wasn’t resolved completely yet.
Similar concerns came up again throughout the next couple of episodes. Josh and Jalyn got their friends together, who asked the couple what they liked to do together. The couple said they were still working that out, and it made Jalyn wonder if maybe she and her husband were too different. Burning Man came up again in Episode 12 when Josh said he wouldn’t go without his wife. Jalyn was concerned Josh was just telling her what she wanted to hear.
Regardless of the obstacles, Josh and Jalyn stayed together on Decision Day. At the reunion, however, they revealed that they had broken up about three months prior. Though Jalyn did wind up attending Burning Man and going on adventures with Josh, her husband was the one to call it quits, leaving Jalyn blindsided.
Pat & Rhonda
Status: Not Together
Pat, 59, and Rhonda, 63, had both been married previously before tying the knot on Married at First Sight. Rhonda showed off her vibrant personality by wearing a red wedding dress. Despite forgetting Pat’s name right after marrying him, this couple had a blast at their reception.
On their honeymoon, Pat and Rhonda encountered their first hiccup. Rhonda began to notice that Pat is “really comfortable talking about himself” and rarely asked her “follow up questions.” Those communication issues continued, and Rhonda confronted Pat. She said she wanted him to really take in what she’s saying and learn more about her. He thought he was doing that, but she brought up that he always turns the conversation back to himself. However, they have already said “I love you.”
Once they moved in together in Episode 6, Pat and Rhonda had a few arguments, but they were mostly worked out after their visit with a MAFS expert. “Even though we still have a lot of work to do, I think that I’m learning [and] we’re both fighting for our future together,” Rhonda said in Episode 7, during which they also discussed how they would navigate Pat moving into and sharing her space.
Episode 8 found the couple sharing their interests with each other and bonding. But when Rhonda took Pat to a concert and she explained what one of the songs meant to her, Pat turned the conversation back to himself. It brought up Rhonda’s earlier concern about Pat not being interested in learning more about her.
More tension came up when they visited the grave of Rhonda’s father, and Pat needed Rhonda to repeat how old she was when he died. She felt like he wasn’t listening to her, and Pat, though he agreed to work on it, didn’t appreciate Rhonda’s scolding. They talked it out, but Episode 10 left with Rhonda describing Pat walking away in the middle of a conversation. “This communication s**t is hard,” she said.
Rhonda brought it up to Pat in the following episode. The latter countered that Rhonda was zeroing in on the occasions that he wasn’t being totally present, but he felt like he was doing a good job of that overall. Later on, Pat explained to a friend that he felt like he was walking on eggshells. Rhonda joined them, and the communication issues came up again. Pat assured his wife that he was interested in her and was working on responding better to emotion, but he also felt like he couldn’t be himself.
They talked it out in Episode 12, with Pat giving Rhonda a bit of context about his background. Rhonda asked if he could be his authentic self around her, and Pat confirmed that he wanted to get there, leading to them choosing to stay together on Decision Day. Pat did begin by saying “no,” but he changed his mind.
At the reunion, Rhonda revealed that they broke up after nine months. After Pat returned from a solo Europe trip, Rhonda said their relationship was at its best. However, when she noticed he was listening to an anger meditation recording, Rhonda asked if he was angry that they hadn’t had sex since he got back. Pat confirmed it, and a short while later, he said he was done. “It was something I had felt for quite some time,” he said. Rhonda said she was turned off by his insecurity.
Belynda & Chad
Status: Not Together
Belynda, 47, and Chad, 54, were the final couple of Season 19 to get married. Belynda and her daughter, Jalyn, are participating in the experiment together. Belynda married young and had her kids at 19. Chad had been married three times before saying “I do” to Belynda.
Before they went on their honeymoon, Belynda and Chad both decided to upgrade their rings. The couple didn’t run into any major problems at the beginning of their honeymoon. Chad said that Belynda is “making my heart happy.”
The couple, who started living together in Episode 6, is still going strong in the latest batch of episodes. There was one moment when producers interrupted a heart-to-heart between Chad and Belynda, and the latter didn’t appreciate her husband’s reaction. After they worked through it, not one conflict arose between them between Episode 6 and 7. Chad was the first to say “I love you,” and though Belynda didn’t return the sentiment immediately, she did in Episode 7.
The next three episodes continued similarly for Belynda and Chad. Belynda started looking into changing her last name to Chad’s in Episode 8, and Chad had only praise for his wife, whom he described as his perfect person. They also opened up about their childhoods in the following episode, and Belynda confirmed that Chad makes her feel safe, which is what she was looking for in a marriage.
Things took a turn in Episode 11. Chad expressed that he was fed up with filming the show, and that the production process was difficult at this stage in his life. He also claimed that production was trying to put a wedge in Josh and Jalyn’s relationship, which Jalyn later denied to her mother. Belynda became worried that Chad wasn’t being honest. She also brought up concern that Chad wasn’t being intimate with her by choosing to wind down at night separately.
Though they both said “yes” on Decision Day, Chad and Belynda broke up a short while later. Belynda was the one to call it off, and during the reunion, she cited issues like a lack of intimacy and “blow ups.”
