‘Maxton Hall’: 7 Burning Questions We Need Answered in Season 3

Maxton Hall knows how to leave fans hanging. If you thought Season 1’s ending was a doozy, the German YA drama upped its game with Season 2. Ruby (Harriet Herbig-Matten) and James (Damian Hardung) decided to be together, ignoring the threats of his father. For some reason, Mortimer (Fedja van Huêt) blames Ruby for all his woes, so he goes nuclear in the finale episode and even frames Ruby for having an affair with a teacher. (His own daughter is the one having the affair.)
In the interim between Seasons 2 and 3 — the latter doesn’t have a release date, but filming has wrapped — we can’t stop thinking about all of the questions that haven’t been answered yet. Sure, we’ve read Mona Kasten’s Maxton Hall trilogy, but there’s no guarantee that it’s going to follow the books exactly. Season 2 ventured away from the source material in several major ways. There are plenty of unknowns going into Maxton Hall’s third and final season, so we’ve rounded up most of them below.
Maxton Hall — The World Between Us, Season 3, TBA, Prime Video
1. What does Percy's key open?
In the finale episode, Percy (Hyun Wanner) is seen clutching a key while hovering over the grave of James’ mother. He kisses it, and that’s the last we see of him. What is this mysterious key, you may be wondering? What does it open, and how is it connected to Cordelia? Book readers likely already have the answer, but show-only fans don’t. (Still, who’s to say the show won’t change something up?)
There’s also the whole fan theory of Percy being connected to Cordelia as more than just her driver or her friend — some have wondered if he could even be the father of James and his twin sister. Whether or not the show will go that route remains to be seen, but Season 3 definitely needs to shed some light on Percy and Cordelia’s relationship.
2. Will Ruby find out that James took the photo?
Remember the days when Ruby and James were enemies rather than lovers? In Season 1, James took a photo of Ruby for insurance, making sure he could use it as blackmail if she chose to reveal his sister’s relationship with a teacher. He made it look like Ruby and Mr. Sutton (Eidin Jalali) were in an intimate position, even though it was totally innocent. (We don’t miss this version of James, safe to say.)
At this point, Ruby doesn’t know how the school board got the photo or where it came from. She’s been in a good place with James since about halfway through Season 2 — but will she find out its origins? If so, how will that impact her relationship with James? Inquiring minds need to know.
3. Will Ruby's parents get the bakery back?
This one is a total deviation from the books, so there’s really no telling how this problem will be solved. In Mortimer’s rampage against Ruby, he drags her family into it. He buys the her mom’s bakery from the current owner. Mrs. Bell had plans to buy the bakery back when she’d saved up enough money. Mortimer also gets Mrs. Bell fired from her job, too, because he’s that ruthless. How will the Bells manage to get their life back on track?
4. What does the future hold for Ruby and her scholarship?
Speaking of Mortimer’s rampage, he also rips Ruby’s scholarship from her, which doesn’t happen in the books. What’s more, Ruby manages to sign up for a scholarship exam that’ll allow her to attend Oxford, but it seems like that didn’t pan out either. In the finale, she’s headed to take the test when she’s called into the headmaster’s office and suspended from school. Season 3 has to find a way for Ruby to get her scholarship back if she’s going to get her happy ending at her dream university.
5. What are Elaine & Cyril's plans for the photo?
Another book change is that Cyril (Ben Felipe) and Elaine (Eli Riccardi) caught Lydia (Sonja Weißer) and Sutton in an intimate moment. Elaine encourages Cyril to snap a photo, and they haven’t done anything with it yet as of the Season 2 finale. Cyril seems to be friends again with the Beaufort twins, but does that mean he’ll keep the photo to himself? What will Elaine do with the knowledge that Lydia’s in deep with her teacher? Only time will tell.
6. Did Mortimer forge his wife's will?
James and his aunt seem pretty certain that there’s no way Cordelia left her company and all of her money to her awful husband, and we share the same opinion. Was Cordelia really so cruel as to leave her children out of her will, or did Mortimer manage to forge it? We wouldn’t put it past him. If so, how will James, Lydia, and Aunt Ophelia go about proving it?
7. Will Mr. Sutton go to jail?
Unlike the book, Mr. Sutton is taken away from school in a police car when he’s exposed for having an affair with a student. Does this mean he’ll be behind bars come Season 3? Does that mean that the father of Lydia’s unborn twins won’t be there for the births? Will Lydia and Sutton even end up together if he’s arrested? (Honestly, we wouldn’t mind that outcome.) Season 3 can’t come fast enough.
