Book To Screen
Sofia Carson & Corey Mylchreest Find Love in First ‘My Oxford Year’ Trailer: All the Latest Updates
Netflix’s movie queen is back at it again! Just a few months after The Life List‘s release, Sofia Carson has another book adaptation headed to the streamer: My Oxford Year. Romance lovers, prepare to swoon (and cry) because this love story is about to consume all your thoughts.
On June 30, the streamer released the official trailer for My Oxford Year. Carson steps into a whole new world as Anna, a new student at Oxford University. She hits it off with Jamie (Corey Mylchreest), her poetry teacher, and they quickly fall into a no strings relationship — or so they think. Anna and Jamie fall in love, and she’s left stunned when he starts pushing her away. Anna refuses to let go of Jamie and the love they clearly have for each other.
“I’m really excited to share this one with the world, especially if you’re a fan of the book. I hope we do it justice. It’s such a beautiful love story, and it feels like a classic. It was really beautiful to be able to bring that to life,” Carson recently told Swooon. Scroll down to get the latest updates about My Oxford Year.
When is My Oxford Year’s release date?
My Oxford Year will be released on Netflix on August 1, 2025. The film is coming out in the middle of summer, but this college romance is going to make you yearn to go back to school.
Who is in My Oxford Year?
Sofia Carson plays Anna De La Vega, a young American woman who heads to the University of Oxford in the U.K. to achieve a childhood dream. Corey Mylchreest, best known for his breakout role as King George in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, plays Jamie Davenport, a charming and handsome local she meets upon arrival.
“They bounced off each other from the first moment they worked together,” director Iain Morris told Tudum, “and clearly enjoyed trying to make each other laugh — and maybe cry?” He added, “I hope watching the film allows the audience to run through all the emotions associated with the wonderful, noisy, chaotic, unexpected, funny, heartbreaking experience that is falling in love.”
The rest of the cast includes Dougray Scott (Ever After), Catherine McCormack (Braveheart), Harry Trevaldwyn (How to Train Your Dragon), Esmé Kingdom (Fallen), Nikhil Parmar (Gran Turismo), Poppy Gilbert (Stay Close), Romina Cocca (The Penguin Lessons), Yadier Fernández (The Gold), Nia Anisah (Magpie Murders), and Hugh Coles (Baby Reindeer).
The movie was written by Allison Burnett, who wrote Autumn in New York, and Melissa Osborne. Iain Morris directed My Oxford Year.
What is My Oxford Year about?
My Oxford Year, based on Julia Whelan’s 2018 novel of the same name, centers around the love story between Anna and Jamie. Anna is stunned to learn that Jamie, the local guy she had a meet-cute with, is her poetry professor at Oxford University. Despite their attempts, sparks fly between them and a deep love blooms.
Those who’ve read My Oxford Year will notice a few changes in the film adaptation. Carson’s character name was changed to Anna from Ella in the book. Carson’s personal background was reflected in her onscreen character. “It was important to have Hispanic representation in the film as I am also Hispanic-American,” Carson told Elle. However, the actress noted that the team “tried to remain as true to the [book] as possible.”
Mylchreest teased to Tudum that My Oxford Year will “bring some laughs, a lot of love, maybe some sadness, a couple of surprises along the way, but [you can expect] to meet two really lovely, very human characters and all of their amazing friends and family. Get ready for a lovely journey.”
Carson believes Anna and Jamie’s romance “reaffirms the belief that life is too short to not live it in love. To not live it in joy. And I hope that truth rings true in the hearts of anyone who watches our film.”
