Though Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) epic love story has anchored Outlanderfor eight seasons, fans have loved Fergus (César Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle) for nearly as long. When Outlander jumped 20 years at the start of Season 3, we found that the Parisian pickpocket who Jamie adopted in Season 2 was all grown up. That wasn’t the only surprise: Fergus had fallen in love with Marsali, the daughter of Jamie’s former wife, Laoghaire (Nell Hudson).
Fergus and Marsali didn’t grow up together, and Jamie left Laoghaire when Claire returned, so we’ve elected to ignore the whole sort-of step-siblings thing. Their romance became one of the show’s most wholesome relationships once they moved from Scotland to America. (Beware of Outlander Season 8 spoilers ahead!)
Though they faced their fair share of relationship troubles toward the end of the show, Fergus and Marsali always found their way through it. That’s part of what makes Fergus’ Season 8 death so tragic. So, we’re taking a moment to reflect on Fergus and Marsali’s most significant relationship moments over the years. Let us know your favorite in the comments at the end of the page.
In Season 3, Claire and Jamie set out on a voyage to rescue their nephew, Ian (John Bell), who was kidnapped by pirates. As they’re about to depart for the West Indies, Fergus shows up with Marsali, who refuses to be left behind. They reveal that they’ve secretly been courting and hand-fasted that morning. They haven’t consummated their unofficial marriage, much to an unhappy Jamie’s relief. Regardless, Fergus and Marsali don’t back down about wanting to be together.

Fergus & Marsali share their first (onscreen) kiss (Season 3, Episode 10)
Once their relationship is revealed, Fergus and Marsali move quickly. When Claire is kidnapped by the British, Jamie tries to take over the ship he’s on and stage a rescue mission, only to be locked up. When Fergus visits his cell, Jamie promises to give him and Marsali his blessing if he frees him. Fergus tells Marsali the plan, and they kiss passionately. It’s certainly not their first, but it’s the first one that viewers see. And boy, what a kiss it is. Marsali asks to go further, but Fergus refuses. He promised Jamie that he wouldn’t.
Everyone’s reunited on the island of Hispaniola. Before they head to Jamaica, they find a priest, and Fergus and Marsali marry. They get Jamie’s blessing, and Marsali and Claire bond. (Marsali treated her frigidly when Claire swooped in and “took” Jamie from her mother.) Jamie and Fergus also smooth things over. Jamie also offers Fergus his surname during the ceremony, so Fergus and Marsali officially become Mr. and Mrs. Fraser.

But when the fire actually does happen, only Marsali manages to rush her daughters out. Fergus finds his sons on the roof of their print shop, looking at the stars as the flames grow more intense. He attaches a rope to his sons and gets them to safety. Marsali, who’s looking on, locks eyes with Fergus in relief. But it doesn’t last long because Fergus falls through the roof and into the flames. Unfortunately, that’s how Fergus and Marsali’s love story ends. Marsali is a shell of herself as she grieves her husband in the aftermath.
