Outlander Season 5 2020

What To Know

  • Outlander‘s Jamie and Claire share daughter Brianna and adopted son Fergus.
  • Jamie also has a son, William, who has a different mother.
  • Jamie and Claire also had stillborn daughter, Faith, whose fate is unclear.

Outlander‘s Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) have been together for decades, and their family has grown steadily over the past seven — going on eight — seasons. Before they had Brianna (Sophie Skelton), the Frasers adopted a kid, and soon after, tragically lost one. (The latter may not actually be true. Season 7 suggests that their baby may have magically survived. More on that below.) Jamie even fathered a son with another woman when he and Claire were separated by time.

Needless to say, the Fraser family tree is nothing if not complicated. Swooon has everything you need to remember about Jamie and Claire’s children and grandchildren. We’re counting Fanny (Florrie May Wilkinson) among them, even though she’s only the couple’s theoretical granddaughter at this point. What happened to Faith in Season 2, and how is Fanny connected to her? Who is William’s (Charles Vandervaart) mother? We’re answering those questions and more below. (Warning: Outlander spoilers ahead!)

Who are Jamie and Claire’s kids?

Faith Fraser

As they’re leaving for France, Claire tells Jamie that she’s pregnant with their first child (Season 1, Episode 16, “To Ransom a Man’s Soul”). In a Parisian hospital, Claire goes into premature labor, and when she comes to later, Mother Hildegarde (Frances de la Tour) tells her that Faith was stillborn.

The nun baptized her baby and named her Faith, allowing her to be buried in hallowed ground. After the birth, Claire nearly dies, but she’s saved by apothecary Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon). He used mysterious (possibly magical) means to heal Claire (Season 2, Episode 7, “Faith”).

Faith’s death might not be as clear-cut as it seems in Season 2. Decades later, on the verge of death after the Battle of Monmouth, Claire sees Master Raymond in a vision, during which he asks for forgiveness. After meeting Fanny Pocock (Florrie May Wilkinson) and hearing about her mother — named Faith — Claire becomes convinced that Raymond somehow helped Faith survive into adulthood (Season 7, Episode 16, “A Hundred Thousand Angels”). (More on that in our section about Fanny and her sister, Jane, below.)

In the Season 8 premiere, Claire and Jamie go on a mission to find out what happened to Fanny’s mother — though they still don’t know for sure if they were the same Faith. Jamie questions a smuggler, Vasquez, whom they were pointed to by Mrs. Abbott. (She owns the brothel where Fanny’s sister worked.) Vasquez didn’t have money to pay off his debts to the brothel, so he used two girls — Fanny and her sister — as payment.

Vasquez found the girls at sea. He was looking for a shipping boat to steal from, but instead found Captain Pocock’s boat, which housed his wife and daughters. Vasquez killed the Captain and assaulted Jane. Faith tried to protect her daughter, so Vasquez threw Faith overboard. Is she really dead? We don’t know yet.

Brianna Randall Fraser MacKenzie

Outlander loves to play with its timeline. At the very start of Season 2 — before the “Faith” episode — the show reveals that Claire is back in her 1948 with her first husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies). Even more shocking, she’s pregnant with Jamie’s child (Season 2, Episode 1, “Through a Glass, Darkly”).

Outlander then rewinds to when Claire was still in the Highlands with Jamie. Toward the end of Season 2, Jamie deduces that Claire is expecting again. Knowing the Battle of Culloden is imminent, he convinces Claire to travel through the stones for her and baby Brianna’s protection (Season 2, Episode 13, “Dragonfly in Amber”).

In the future, Frank raises Brianna as his own, under the condition that Claire doesn’t search for Jamie’s fate in the history books — and that Brianna remains in the dark until Frank dies. He’s already gone when the show jumps to 1968 in the Season 2 finale. Brianna, with her future husband Roger’s (Richard Rankin) help, finds out Claire was missing when she was conceived. Claire comes clean about everything, and eventually, Brianna believes her mother.

Once her mother returns to the past (Season 3, Episode 6, titled “A. Malcolm”), Brianna herself eventually travels through the stones when she discovers their untimely deaths (Season 4, Episode 7, “Down the Rabbit Hole”). She finally meets Jamie for the first time (Season 4, Episode 9, “The Birds & the Bees”). Roger, the future father of Brianna’s children, follows a few episodes later.

César Domboy as Fergus Fraser in Outlander - Season 5

Fergus Fraser

Once Jamie and Claire are in Paris, the former encounters a young, orphaned Fergus (first played by Romann Berrux) pickpocketing people at a brothel (Season 2, Episode 3, “Useful Occupations and Deceptions”). Jamie hires Fergus to steal for him. When Jamie brings Fergus back to his lodgings, Claire accepts that Fergus will be living with them.

From then on, Fergus becomes Jamie and Claire’s adoptive son and travels back to Scotland with them. Jamie officially gives Fergus (César Domboy) his last name when he marries Marsali (Lauren Lyle) in Season 3. Claire and Jamie consider Fergus and Marsali’s kids as their grandchildren.

William Ransom

William isn’t Claire’s son, but Jamie’s. When he became an indentured servant after the Battle of Culloden, Jamie sleeps with Geneva Dunsany, one of the daughters of the family he’s serving. (Remember, Jamie and Claire are still in different time periods.) She dies giving birth to their son, William.

The Dunsanys take William as their own, and Jamie remains in the family’s service, watching his son grow to eight years old. Ultimately, it gets too risky for Jamie to remain with the family because his resemblance to William becomes more obvious. When Isobel Dunsany (Tanya Reynolds) marries Jamie’s friend, Lord John Grey (David Berry), they take William in as their own. As a result, William is the ninth Earl of Ellesmere.

Once Jamie is presumed dead, Claire temporarily becomes William’s stepmom, marrying John to avoid arrest as an American rebel spy (Season 7, Episode 10, “Brotherly Love”). When Jamie returns alive, William accidentally learns the truth of his parentage, overhearing John tell Jamie that “[his] son will be home soon” (Season 7, Episode 11, “A Hundredweight of Stones”).

Who are Jamie and Claire’s grandchildren?

Jemmy and Mandy in 'Outlander' Season 7

Starz

Jeremiah “Jemmy” Fraser MacKenzie & Amanda “Mandy” MacKenzie

Jemmy (Blake Johnston-Miller) and Mandy (Rosa Morris) are Brianna and Roger’s kids, both of whom share their time-traveling ability. At first, it isn’t clear if Jemmy’s biological father is Roger or Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers), who assaulted Bri when she traveled back in time. Roger grapples with that revelation when Brianna is about to give birth to Jemmy at River Run (Season 4, Episode 13, “Man of Worth”).

It takes him a bit of time, but Roger returns to River Run to accept Jemmy as his own. Brianna later discovers that Jemmy has a birthmark that matches Roger’s (Season 6, Episode 8, “I Am Not Alone”). Jemmy and his family return to the future when his sister, Amanda, is born with a heart issue that requires modern medical attention (Season 7, Episode 2, “The Happiest Place on Earth”).

OUTLANDER, Cesar Domboy (head of table); Caitriona Balfe (4th from right); Sam Heughan (2nd from right), (Season 8, ep. 801, aired March 6, 2026).

Germain, Joan, Felicité, & Henri-Christian Fraser

After Fergus and Marsali marry, they reveal that they’re expecting their first child (Season 4, Episode 1, “America the Beautiful”). Once Germain is born, the new parents move to Fraser’s Ridge and settle there. It’s where they also have Joan (who’s born off-camera) as well as Felicité (Season 5, Episode 9, “Monster and Heroes”).

Marsali and Fergus’ fourth child, Henri-Christian, is born with dwarfism (Season 6, Episode 2, “Allegiance”). Fergus struggles with the fact at first. Further, when he lived in the brothel, Fergus befriended someone with dwarfism who was later murdered. Fergus also thinks Henri-Christian’s dwarfism is a punishment for his sins. Jamie helps Fergus work through his fear and be there for his family (Season 6, Episode 3, “Temperance”).

Fanny and Jane in Outlander

Unconfirmed: Jane & Frances “Fanny” Pocock

First going by the name Arabella, Jane (Silvia Presente) crosses paths with William in Philadelphia, and she invites him into her brothel for a drink. William, reeling from the discovery of his parentage, reacts badly, though he later protects Jane from being assaulted by Captain Harkness (Adam Jackson-Smith). They sleep together — and if you’ve been keeping up, you know why that could be problematic. They might be related if Claire’s Faith theory proves correct.

After Harkness shows up to torture Jane, she runs away from the brothel with her little sister, Fanny (Florrie May Wilkinson). They find William to protect them, who agrees and hires Jane as his laundress. When Harkness finds the sisters and attempts to take Fanny’s virginity, Jane kills him (Season 7, Episode 14, “Ye Dinna Get Used To It”). She’s arrested, and though William is able to protect Fanny, Jane dies by suicide before the British army can hang her for murder.

Claire and Jamie take Fanny in. She first shares that her mother’s name was Faith. Later, Claire hears Fanny singing a lullaby — the same one Claire sang to her stillborn baby. Fanny says her mother taught it to her (Season 7, Episode 16, “A Hundred Thousand Angels”). Only time will tell if Outlander just made its family tree even more complicated than it already is!
