Joe Goldberg’s Girlfriends on ‘You’: What Happened to All His Former Love Interests?

Joe Goldberg With Beck and Love on You
Netflix/Everett Collection

You is returning with its fifth and final season, and Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) has been on quite the journey throughout the show’s run so far. Since it’s been two years since we last saw the charming but murderous stalker, we figured it might be time for a reminder about where all of the women from his past ended up.

It’s no secret that Joe has a murderous streak, and most of the ladies from his past have ended up dead (although it wasn’t he who killed them all). Some of Joe’s exes have been lucky enough to survive, although there’s no telling what Season 5 has in store for old and new characters.

So, what fate did all of the women in Joe’s life meet? Swooon compiled a roundup of his former lovers and is giving you a refresher on what happened to the leading man’s former girlfriends. Scroll down for more!

Beck

Beck (Elizabeth Lail) was Joe’s main love interest in Season 1. Although their relationship had many ups and downs, he always managed to use his way with words to win her back.

That is, until she finally figured out that he was hoarding her personal items and was behind the deaths of her best friend, Peach (Shay Mitchell), and ex Benji (Lou Taylor Pucci). When Joe realized that Beck was onto him, he had “no choice” but to lock her up in the basement of his bookstore.

Season 1 ended with the revelation that Beck had died (her book was published posthumously), but it wasn’t until Season 2 that we found out how she actually died.

In one of Joe’s hallucinations, Beck appeared with bruises on her neck, confirming that Joe strangled her to death.

Karen

Karen Minty (Natalie Paul) was able to escape Joe before she suffered the same fate as Beck.

After Beck broke up with Joe because there was no trust in their relationship — he accused her of cheating on him with her therapist (John Stamos) — he began a relationship with Karen, who was friends with his neighbor.

They were together for a few months before crossing paths with Beck, which put Joe’s ex back on his radar. He began cheating on Karen with Beck and ultimately broke up with her.

Karen remained calm throughout the breakup and only appeared in the show one more time when she approached Beck to thank her for being her “get out of Joe free card.” She clearly saw that the dude was bad news!

Candace

Before the events of Season 1 took place, Joe was in a relationship with Candace (Ambyr Childers). She appeared throughout the season in flashbacks as Beck  tried to piece together what happened to Joe before she met him.

Joe’s story was that Candace ran off to Rome and ghosted everyone in her life after they broke up. It eventually came out that Candace, an aspiring musician, cheated on Joe with the man who signed her to his record label. Of course, Joe killed this man after he found out.

Meanwhile, Joe kidnapped Candace and knocked her out with a rock when she tried to run away from him. He thought he killed her, but she wound up escaping from the grave he built and came back into his life at the end of Season 1.

In Season 2, it was revealed that she tried to go to the police but had no evidence to make Joe pay for what he did. She then infiltrated herself back into Joe’s life amid his relationship with Love (Victoria Pedretti). (More on her later.)

In an effort to destroy Joe, Candace told Love everything, but it turns out that Love was just as twisted as Joe. She ended up slitting Candace’s throat and killing her (for real this time).

Love

Love Quinn was Joe’s new love interest in Season 2. By the end of the season, it was revealed that Love loved killing just as much as Joe. They were seemingly a match made in heaven.

But Joe was horrified to learn about Love’s past. He nearly killed her at the end of Season 2 but stopped himself when he found out she was pregnant with his child. Season 3 saw the couple married and raising their son in the suburbs. But their love story didn’t have a happily ever after.

After they both developed new crushes throughout the season, Love came up with a plan to kill Joe by giving him a fatal dose of aconite. However, he caught onto her plan when he noticed that she was growing the plant in their backyard.

Joe ended up injecting himself with adrenaline, the antidote for aconite, and killed Love with his own portion of the toxic plant.

Before escaping town, Joe set the house on fire and left a suicide note from Love. Oh, and he also cut off his toe and baked it into a pie so his own DNA would be found at the scene.

Carmela Zumbado as Delilah on You
Netflix

Delilah

Delilah (Carmela Zumbado) rented Joe an apartment in Season 2 of You, but they eventually struck up a romance.

However, it didn’t last long. After Delilah began having suspicions about Joe, she stole the key to his storage unit and found a glass cage there. When he saw her on his nanny cam at the storage unit, he showed up and knocked her out.

It wasn’t Joe who ended up killing Delilah, though. He had a close relationship with her sister (Jenna Ortega) and didn’t want to hurt her, but Love couldn’t have cared less. Love slit Delilah’s throat and killed her in order to protect Joe from Delilah exposing his secrets.

Natalie

When Joe and Love first moved to the suburbs, he had his eye on their neighbor, Natalie (Michaela McManus), from the get-go.

However, it didn’t take long for Love to discover her husband’s wandering eye. She quickly discovered his box of Natalie’s possessions and killed Natalie with an ax before Joe could pursue the relationship any further. Joe helped Love dispose of Natalie’s body after he found out what she did.

Marienne

After Natalie’s death, Joe set his sights on the local librarian Marienne (Tati Gabrielle). This time, the relationship did develop into a full-blown affair.

When Love found out about it, she also learned that Marienne was a single mother. Instead of killing her, she informed Marienne of Joe’s true nature.

Marienne was able to escape, but Joe found out she was in Europe and followed her there. She was living in Paris, but crossed paths with Joe at an art fair in London.

Although it initially seemed like he let her go back to her daughter in France after their encounter, later episodes revealed that he had actually drugged Marienne and was keeping her locked in a glass cage (although he was disassociating while doing so).

Joe’s student Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) eventually found Marienne, and the women devised a plan to trick Joe. She pretended to have an allergic reaction to a drink he gave her, then faked an overdose on a bottle of pills that he left in the cage.

After finding Marienne, Joe left her on a park bench with the hope that her cause of death would be ruled an accidental overdose. However, Marienne had actually taken beta blockers to prevent an overdose, and Nadia later arrived to wake her up.

The season ended with Marienne reuniting with her daughter in Paris, while also finding out that Joe had started a new life in New York.

Charlotte Ritchie as Kate, Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg in episode 409 of You
Netflix

Kate

Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) was Joe’s Season 4 love interest. They met when he became infiltrated into her friend group in London.

After a string of mysterious deaths, Joe placed the blame on Rhys (Ed Speleers). However, it turned out that he was the one actually committing the murders while disassociating, and the evil version of Rhys was just another version of himself.

Although Joe tried to kill himself, he woke up in a hospital bed with Kate by his side. He told her everything (aside from the fact that her father was one of his victims), and she promised to stand by him.

They moved to New York together where Kate helped Joe rebuild his life. With her family’s resources, she was able to help him get his son back and start over. Of course, we’ll have to see where that leads in Season 5…
