Director Justin Wu will also take the lead on the sequel. He directed the first film.

James Van Der Beek will return as Leroy Lahey, Drayton’s father. Drew Ray Tanner will be back as well. He plays Nathan Bryan, Dallas’ older brother and guardian. Julie and the Phantoms alum Charlie Gillespie is new to the cast as Skyler, a musician and CalArts senior. Firefly Lane star Roan Curtis will play Charlotte, a USC senior working as a student athlete trainer.

Other new cast members include Kolton Stewart as Zach, Sage Linder as Miley, Terry Mullany as Ryan, and Michael Xavier as Coach Watson.

“I’m beyond thrilled to have James and Drew return for the sequel—they brought so much heart and depth to the first film, and their journey continues in an even bigger way. Is Sidelined 2 based on a book?

The next installment is based on Tay Marley’s sequel to Sidelined: The QB & Me. The New Zealand writer has actually written two sequels for her hit novel: Playing For Keeps and All This Time. Marley revealed that Playing For Keeps follows “Dallas’ brother, Nathan, a little more closely.”

Beck, who didn’t just portray one of the leads but was also an executive producer, was dedicated to staying true to the source material. “I felt it was like part of my responsibility to do the book justice,” he told Swooon.

What will the sequel be about?

According to the press release, “The sequel will focus on freshman star quarterback Drayton as he struggles with the weight of expectations after a devastating setback, while dancer Dallas begins to question the future she thought she wanted. As their high school relationship begins to unravel under the pressures of distance and self-discovery, they’ll learn that the bravest versions of themselves emerge when they let life redirect them.”
