Mindy Kaling is a mastermind of the rom-com. From The Mindy Project to Never Have I Ever to The Sex Lives of College Girls, the mogul has left an indelible mark on television.

Like so many of us, Kaling loves romance. Whether it’s in the pages of a book or onscreen, romance is what draws her in. She’s read the classics like  Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights, of course, but Kaling has also fallen in love with the Outlander novels.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon was so amazing,” she told Swooon. “And I don’t usually read those kind of historical romances. They’re not usually my jam. But I love the series so much.”

She continued, “World-building is so hard to me. I do a lot of shows about experiences that I’ve directly had. My mom was a doctor. I’ve worked in an office, I’ve been to college, I’ve been to high school. So when somebody can create this world and there’s time travel? To me, that’s so impressive.”

Gabaldon released the first Outlander book all the way back in 1991. Over the past three decades, she has published eight more Outlander novels and is currently working on the tenth book in the long-running series.

As Kaling pointed out, Gabaldon has created an expansive world in her novels that has spanned centuries and continents. The TV adaptation of Outlander has become a global phenomenon since its premiere in 2014. In 2025, the original series will be coming to an end after eight seasons and the prequel Blood of My Blood will premiere.

Kaling hasn’t tackled time travel in her work just yet, but maybe she’ll take some inspiration from the Outlander author in her future projects. We’re already manifesting a Kaling historical romance over here.
