‘The Rookie’ Star on Grey’s ‘Mixed Feelings’ About Chenford

Are Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) working their way back together on The Rookie? It certainly seems like it’s possible after their Valentine’s Day hookup and promo for the April 1 episode! As lieutenant, Grey does have to consider quite a bit about his officers, including how their personal lives might interfere with their professional ones. Swooon checked in with Richard T. Jones about how his character feels about that.

“I think Grey has mixed feelings,” he says with a laugh. “He loves both of them. He loves Lucy, he loves Tim. He knows that it is a bad idea for two officers to be together, but he also wants them to be happy. So I think he’s caught in that particular thing. As a friend, he embraces the fact that they want to be together, but as their boss, he understands the difficulties in doing that successfully and how it can impede with choices made on the field. It can impede with their attitudes pertaining to things altogether, just because work relationships are very hard at some point. So I think he is not pushing it, but he understands that if it happens, they got to be aware of what’s going on, which is a big thing for the April 1 episode, too.”

The promo for that episode, which you can watch above, shows Lucy telling Tim that since it’s April Fools’ Day, nothing counts, which leads to a steamy encounter — he does, after all, answer the door shirtless. The logline teases, “An April Fools’ prank on LAPD’s social media leads to citywide chaos. Meanwhile, John’s [Nathan Fillion] T.O. skills are tested, Wesley [Shawn Ashmore] is assigned a challenging case, and Tim and Lucy play a joke on the team.”

In the latest episode, “Speed,” Tim had Lucy practice being a sergeant, and after, she remarked that she never heard him complain about ordering him around, then quickly added, “Did that sound flirty? I really didn’t mean for it to.”

He said he didn’t mind, but she insisted, “No, that was. It’s unprofessional and we’re just coworkers. … I mean, we’re not just coworkers. What am I trying to say right now?” He didn’t know. “I’m not seeing anyone right now or looking to see anyone,” she shared. (Neither is he.) But she stressed that they had to think about boundaries “because I still haven’t forgiven you yet.” She did say that when she did, he could help her study for the sergeant’s exam.
